VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL
Dorman Products, Inc. (Dorman) is recalling certain Accelerator Pedal Assemblies part numbers 699-114 and 825-5029-1, sold as replacement parts for 2003-2006 Acura MDX, 2004-2008 Acura TL and TSX, 2003-2007 Honda Accord, 2005-2006 Honda CR-V, 2007-2011 Honda Element, 2005-2008 Honda Pilot and 2006-2014 Honda Ridgeline vehicles. The rotating portion of the accelerator pedal assembly may bind. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 124, "Accelerator Control Systems."
Fix: Dorman will notify owners, and qualified service facilities will replace the affected accelerator pedal assemblies, free of charge. The recall began December 9, 2019. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492, using option 5. Dorman's number for this recall is AS1019XXXX.

While driving at high speed on the interstate, your car suddenly stopped responding to the gas pedal without any warning. The engine wouldn't accelerate even though you were pressing the pedal. The contact owns a 2007 Honda Accord. The contact stated that after shifting into drive(D) with the brake pedal depressed to the floorboard, the vehicle suddenly accelerated and crashed into nearby vehicles and structures. The contact was able to use the parking brake to stop the vehicle. The contact stated that she had smelled gasoline inside the cabin of the vehicle prior to the failure; however, the contact was informed that the odor was related to a faulty gas cap. No air bags had deployed. No warning lights were illuminated. A Police report was not filed. There were no injuries sustained. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19E068000 (Vehicle Speed Control) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 240,000.
Engine acceleration while braking. After a short 15 min trip I returned home and entered driveway which is sloped down hill. Depressed brake and engine RPM went from about 1000 to over 3000 RPM. Released brake for a sec and tapped accelerator. RPM went back down and brakes returned to normal. I thought that loose carpet on mat may have interfered with accelerator and I removed it. About 5 hr later I was travelling for about 20 min on 55 mph highway and approached a red light. I depressed brake and slowed down to 5-10 mph. Engine rpm again went up to 3000-4000 RPM, I put automatic transmission in neutral tapped accelerator and RPM returned to idle 800. This again occurred for 5 more times before I returned home. When I pulled into my drive way I slowly reached the end and put the car in park, set the emergency brake, and let it idle for about 30 sec. I then depressed the brake a little and the RPM increased from 800 to just over 1000. I then depressed the brake harder and the RPM shot up to about 4000. At no time was the accelerator depressed or moved. I shut off the ignition and attempted to duplicate the error but could not. I also checked all the vacuum lines from the brake booster for leaks. There were no warning lights and a scan did not indicate any trouble codes. I have not brought it to a dealer as I am seeing if I can reproduce and troubleshoot the problem. I am an engineer and have done all my auto service and repairs for close to 50 years. This includes rebuilding engines, transmissions (manual/auto), and electrical troubleshooting. I can assure you this is not due to floor mat interference or incorrect application of pedals.
MY CAR HAS HAD ENGINE ISSUES FOR THE LAST ALMOST 8 YEARS. BURNING OIL AT A MASSIVE RATE. IT ALSO STALLS WITH THIS SUDDEN JERK AND ROCKING SENSATION WHEN ACCELERATING/SHIFTING AT A LOW SPEED. I BOUGHT MY CAR BRAND NEW BUT FIRST BEGAN EXPERIENCING THIS ROCKING SENSATION IN NOVEMBER OF 2008 WHILE DRIVING DOWN A SLIGHT INCLINE AT A LOW SPEED ON A STREET. THIS ROCKING STOPPED ON ITS OWN FOR QUITE A WHILE. THEN IN APRIL 2011 IT BEGAN AGAIN WHERE AT HONDA'S DIAGNOSIS AND RECOMMENDATION THEY TOOK MY ENGINE APART AND 'FIXED' THE PROBLEM WHEN IT LATER AROSE IN 2014. THIS ISSUE HAS NOW ESCALATED TO THE ENGINE STALLING WHEN I DRIVE OVER 80 MILES AN HOUR - ACCELERATION SUSPENDS UNTIL THE SPEED DROPS BACK DOWN TO 70 MILES AN HOUR. IT'S SO UNSAFE BUT BECAME PREDICTABLE AND NORMAL. IN ALL OF THIS MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WILL NOT GO OFF HENCE CAUSING THE CAR TO FAIL EMISSIONS TESTS. I HAVE BROUGHT THIS UP TO MY LOCAL HONDA DEALERSHIP ALONG WITH EXCESSIVE BURNING OF OIL. I HAVE PERFORMED THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST FOR THE DEALERSHIP TO SAY THAT MY CONSUMPTION - THOUGH CLEARLY EXCESSIVE AND VERY DARK - IS TECHNICALLY WITHIN HONDA'S PARAMETERS. EVERY TIME I RE-VISITED EITHER ISSUE I WAS GIVEN THE RUN AROUND AND NOW DEEMED BY MANY MECHANICS EVEN AT HONDA TO NOT PUT ANYMORE MONEY INTO THE CAR. THE DIAGNOSES WENT FROM O2 SENSOR TO CAM CHAIN TO NOW THE ROCKER ARM. IN 2014 WHEN HONDA SUPOSSESLY 'FIXED' THE CAM CHAIN I WAS EXPLICITLY TOLD THAT THIS WAS THE REASON MY CAR JERKED AND ROCKED BUT CLEARLY THAT WAS A FABRICATION. MY CAR PRESENTLY BURNS AT MINIMUM 2 QUARTS OF OIL A WEEK. UPON RECENT RESEARCH I SAW A RECALL ON 2007 HONDA ACCOR ENGINES FOR STALLING BUT MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT INCLUDED.
THIS OCCURRED WHILE THE CAR WAS STILL IN MOTION. WHEN I TRY TO PRESS THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN, THE CAR CONTINUES TO ACCELERATE WHILE MAKING A LOUD REVVING SOUND. THIS OCCURS ABOUT TWICE WHILE I AM DRIVING. IT IS AS IF THE CAR DOES NOT WANT TO SLOW DOWN AT TIMES.
WHILE PARKING MY 2007 HONDA ACCORD IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA, I PUT IT INTO REVERSE WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN, AND THE BRAKES FAILED, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO CRASH INTO A PARKED CAR WITH ENOUGH FORCE TO MOVE IT ABOUT 3 FEET, PUSHING IT UP OVER THE CURB AND ONTO THE SIDEWALK. A SECOND PARKED VEHICLE WAS ALSO DAMAGED. WITH MY FOOT STILL ON THE BRAKE, I SHIFTED INTO DRIVE, AND THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED FORWARD AT AN ALARMING RATE OF SPEED FOR ABOUT ONE/TENTH MILE, WHERE I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO STOP. THE REAR DAMAGE ON MY CAR WAS SO EXTENSIVE THAT THE CAR WAS DEEMED A TOTAL LOSS BY MY INSURANCE COMPANY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. MILEAGE ON THE VEHICLE WAS APPROXIMATELY 33,300 MILES. UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION WITH ENGINE STUCK AT FULL THROTTLE.. CONDITIONS AT THE TIME: SNOW ON ROAD; LARGE SNOW BANKS AT SIDES OF ROAD.. AGAIN, ON OR ABOUT SEPTEMBER 23, 2008, IT HAPPENED AGAIN WHILE WAITING ON LINE AT THE GAS STATION. DID THE SAME AS BEFORE, SHIFTED TO PARK, PULLED EMERGENCY BRAKES ON. REVVING STOPPED. RETURNED CAR TO DEALER, EXPLAINED PROBLEM AGAIN. THEY ROAD TESTED CAR, CHECKED IDLE CONTROL, AND TRANSMISSION PCM FOR FAILURE CODES AND RETRIEVED NONE. THE SAME PROBLEM HAPPEN AGAIN APPROXIMATELY 3 MORE TIME AFTER THAT AND THE PROBLEM HAD NOT RECURRED SINCE. DID ANYONE ENCOUNTERED A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH THEIR HONDA ACCORD? MY SON WAS DRIVING MY 2007 HONDA ACCORD. IT WAS APPROXIMATELY 5:00 PM. THE WEATHER WAS CLEAR AND DRY. HE WAS PARKED IN A RESIDENTIAL DRIVEWAY. AFTER STARTING THE CAR NORMALLY, HE PROCEEDED TO PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE AND LIGHTLY PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO EXIT THE DRIVEWAY. THE CAR BEGAN TO RAPIDLY AND UNCONTROLLABLY ACCELERATE IN REVERSE. HE THEN DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL ATTEMPTING TO STOP THE CAR. HOWEVER, THE BRAKE PEDAL HAD NO EFFECT AND THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE THROUGH A 4X4 WOODEN MAILBOX POST AND UPHILL ON THE DRIVEWAY ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE STREET. HE CONTINUED TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL, HOWEVER ACCELERATION CONTINUED UNIMPEDED. THE CAR FINALLY CAME TO A STOP AFTER CRASHING REAR-ENDED INTO A HOUSE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE STREET. LUCKILY, HE DID NOT SUSTAIN ANY INJURY. HOWEVER, DUE TO THE SEVERE DAMAGE TO THE CAR, MY INSURANCE COMPANY DECLARED IT A TOTAL LOSS. THE CAUSE OF THIS UNCONTROLLABLE AND UNINTENDED ACCELERATION HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED. *TR

ON 4 SEPARATE OCCASIONS I'VE BEEN DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND BEFORE ENTERING THE HIGHWAY( AT 25-35 MPH) AND HAVE FELT A LURCH FORWARD MOVEMENT FROM THE VEHICLE ALMOST LIKE A ROUGH SHIFT FROM TRANSMISSION(VEH IS AUTOMATIC)--ITS HAPPENED WHEN I'VE WARMED THE CAR UP FOR LESS THAN MY CUSTOMARY 10 MINUTES . I'VE FELT IT SEVERAL TIMES(4-5) WHILE DRIVING A DISTANCE OF 25 MILES)ON EACH TRIP. I WENT TO THE DEALER/BALANCE TIRES/COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING/TOLD TO BRING BACK WHEN IT HAPPENS/IT HAPPENED AGAIN WHEN IT WAS SNOWING (AND THE OTHER TIMES I'VE NOTICED IT. I WAS DRIVING INTO A MCDONALD'S PARKING LOT, LOOKING FOR AN EMPTY SPOT SO THAT WE COULD USE THE REST ROOMS. IT WAS NOV. 30TH, SUNDAY AFTERNOON, AND THE LOOT WAS FULL OF PEOPLE RETURNING FROM THEIR THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY. FINALLY SAW ONE OPEN SPOT. AS I TURNED RIGHT TO ENTER THE SPOT, THERE WAS A NOISE AND A SUDDEN ACCELERATION. THIS PARKING SPOT ENDED WITH A 6 TO 8 INCH CONCRETE CURB. THERE WAS A SUDDEN ACCELERATION AND MY AUTO FLEW LIKE A ROCKET SHIP INTO THE CONCRETE CURB. SMOKE WAS COMING OUT OF THE ENGINE, OIL WAS FLOWING ALL OVER THE PAVEMENT, PEOPLE WERE SCREAMING GET OUT OF THAT CAR. FORTUNATELY, WE TURNED THE ENGINE OFF IMMEDIATELY MOST PROBABLY AVOIDING A MORE SERIOUS PROBLEM. THE DAMAGE TO THE BODY OF MY AUTO WAS ALMOST $5000 AND APPROXIMATELY THE SAME AMOUNT TO FIX THE ENGINE. THIS CAR WAS ONLY TWO YEARS OLD WITH A MILEAGE OF APPROXIMATELY 22,000 MILES. THIS CAR WAS IN THE HONDA BODY SHOP FOR 4 WEEKS UNTIL THE REPAIRS WERE COMPLETED. THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE SURGE AND THEREFORE MADE NO CORRECTION FOR THE FAILURE. *TR

ON SEPTEMBER 17, 2007, I WAS MAKING A RIGHT TURN INTO MY PARKING SPACE AT MY CONDO, WHEN SUDDENLY AND QUICKLY, MY 2007 HONDA ACCORD ACCELERATED FORWARD, CAUSING THE CAR TO GO OVER THE PARKING BLOCK AND CRASH INTO THE PALM TREE ON THE LAWN. THE DISTANCE THE CAR TRAVELED WAS APPROXIMATELY 15-20 FEET. IT WAS QUITE FREAKY AND EXTREMELY FRIGHTENING. FORTUNATELY, I DID NOT SUSTAIN ANY SERIOUS INJURIES. IF THE PALM TREE HAD NOT BEEN THERE, MY CAR WOULD HAVE CRASHED INTO THE FRONT PORCH OF MY NEIGHBOR'S GROUND FLOOR CONDO. MY ACCORD HAS NOT YET BEEN TOWED AWAY FOR DAMAGE ASSESSMENT AND REPAIR. HOWEVER, THE POLICE REPORT LISTED THE DAMAGE AT APPROXIMATELY. $4000. I AM VERY RELUCTANT TO DRIVE A HONDA VEHICLE EVER AGAIN. *JB

APPROXIMATELY FOUR DAYS LATER, THE SHAKING RECURRED. THE DEALER ROTATED THE TIRES, BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED. AS OF JULY 17, 2007, THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE DEALER SUGGESTED THAT THE CAUSE OF FAILURE COULD BE THE LOWER STEERING SHAFT, HOWEVER, THE PART WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE POWERTRAIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 2,200 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,000.
