VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SEDAN, COUPE AND WAGON PASSENGER VEHICLES EXCEPT THE DX MODEL AND MODELS WITH V6 ENGINES. THE FACTORY INSTALLED AIR CONDITIONER WIRE HARNESS WAS IMPROPERLY ROUTED ALLOWING SOME WIRES TO RUB AGAINST EACH OTHER, EVENTUALLY CAUSING A SHORT CIRCUIT.

Your car's airbag system isn't working properly — the SRS warning light is illuminated on your dashboard. This means the airbags may not deploy in a crash, which is a serious safety issue. You'll need to have a technician scan the SRS system with a diagnostic tool to identify the specific problem and repair it.

During a car accident, your airbag deployed but a metal fragment from the airbag inflator punctured your leg and fractured your tibia (shin bone). You were also treated for chest wall injuries and are currently on bed rest, unable to work until a follow-up appointment. This is a known issue with Takata airbag inflators that can rupture and send metal shards into the cabin during deployment.

Your 1996 Honda Accord has Takata airbags that are subject to a safety recall due to a known defect. According to reports, Takata has acknowledged the problem and is recalling approximately 40 million affected vehicles. Your vehicle's age puts it within the high-risk window for potential airbag failure. You should contact Honda or check NHTSA's website to verify your vehicle's recall status and schedule a service appointment for airbag replacement.

Your SRS (airbag system) warning light has been on continuously since January 2010, and you haven't received any recall notice from Honda about this issue. A functioning airbag system is critical for your safety in a crash, so this needs to be diagnosed and repaired by a technician who can read the airbag system's diagnostic codes and replace any faulty sensors or components.

You received a Takata airbag recall notice for your 1996 Honda Accord hatchback in October 2017. When you entered your VIN online, the system indicated your car qualified for the airbag recall or replacement. However, when you contacted a local Honda dealer to schedule the service, they told you your vehicle doesn't meet the recall requirements — despite the online tool saying it did. This discrepancy between the online recall tool and the dealer's assessment is a safety concern that needs clarification.

Your airbag warning light turns on when you start the car and stays on while you're driving until you turn off the engine. This has been happening continuously since April 2016. The cost to repair this issue is very high relative to your car's value. The underlying airbag system may need diagnostic testing and component replacement to resolve the warning light.

NHTSA #: 10893724

Filed: Jul 2016

Your 1996 Honda Accord has a Takata airbag on the passenger side (part #06780-SV1-A82ZB) and possibly the driver's side, but your vehicle wasn't included in the Takata recall even though these airbags are known to have malfunction issues. You're unable to get clear answers from Honda or NHTSA about why your car with documented Takata airbags wasn't recalled, and Honda's records claim they didn't install Takata airbags in 1996 models—contradicting dealer documentation. Resolving this may require contacting NHTSA directly, getting independent verification of which airbag manufacturer is actually in your vehicle, or consulting a Honda dealer about airbag replacement or removal options.

Your SRS (airbag system) warning light is on and has been for a while. You noticed it while driving, but haven't had it repaired because the cost would be very expensive relative to the car's value. The repair will likely involve diagnostic testing and replacement of faulty airbag system components.
