Owner Complaints (109)
Your car was recalled in December 2024 for a faulty canister purge valve, which you had replaced in April 2025. After the repair, your car continued to stall and act like it was running out of gas even with a full tank, especially at highway speeds — this created a dangerous jerking and sudden slowdown that could have caused an accident. The dealership discovered the fuel tank was collapsing, likely caused by the original valve malfunction, but Ford refused to cover the $2,600 tank replacement under the recall. Fixing this issue will require replacing the fuel tank and related components to restore proper fuel system function.

I am the owner of a 2017 Ford Focus vehicle. Recently, I have encountered multiple occurrences of stalling while driving on the highway. In two of these instances, I was in the process of passing a semi-truck and fortunately had no other vehicle behind me, or my safety and that of others may have been put at great risk. After the first incident, the check engine light appeared and was addressed by a mechanic who believed it was likely the result of a vapor lock. The issue later reoccurred and left me stranded on the interstate in a rural location where I had to wait for several hours before being transported to a nearby hotel. The vehicle started again the following morning, and I was able to finish the trip. After conducting some research, I discovered two separate recalls (identified by the NHTSA Campaign IDs 18V735000 and 19V515000) that had been issued for cars of this model and encompassing the year of my vehicle’s construction. The malfunction, as issued by a mechanic, fit the exact specifications of the recall; that is, malfunction of the canister purge valve, causing excessive vacuum in fuel vapor management systems, that can result in an engine stall while driving and without warning. I was surprised to learn that my vehicle’s VIN was not associated with any such recall; however, I was informed by my mechanic that a software update (18s32) had occurred on June 6, 2019, possibly removing association of the recall statement with my vehicle’s VIN. I am unsure at this time of the extent of damage to the carbon canister, fuel tank, and fuel delivery module. The only issue visible from the exterior is a slight depression of the fuel tank caused by excessive vacuum. The canister purge valve was replaced on September 10, at a cost of $270.03. Due to the nature of the incident and its exact resemblance of the recall issued, I would like to seek compensation for the replacement of the defective purge valve and further inspection of the carbon canister, fuel tank, a

I took my vehicle to have the recall repaired they did not fix all the issues with the recall as soon as I picked it up it broke down again. They are now charging me for a diagnostic test that I did not ask for they told me the problem they think it is which is covered by the recall but now they refuse to work on my car. The service manager is rude and unprofessional cussing at me and my husband on the phone. Now I'm stuck with a car that doesn't work and they are refusing to replace parts that are covered under the recall.
Car stutters when accelerating, has very low idle to the point of feeling like stalling, Car has stalled after filling up with fuel. The code that the car is giving is P1450 "Unable to bleed up fuel tank vacuum"
My car does not turn on immediately after filling my gas tank. The entire car stutters and shakes when I accelerate from a stop. My car is running the fault codes P1450 and P0420, so there is excessive vacuum in my fuel tank/EVAP and low catalyst system efficiency due to the problems with the exhaust or fuel system. It is available for inspection upon request. My safety is out at risk because my car could stall while driving and not start up again, leading to a possible crash. It will be confirmed by a dealer tomorrow, and has not been inspected yet. I have a check engine light and running those codes. The problem progressed from stuttering when accelerated to the vehicle not being able to turn on when filled with gas.

Purge valve failure causing stalling
Stalling out repeatedly while driving since I have purchased the car. No issues being read on any code readers. Has happened 12 times in 2 years. Plenty of fuel. Replaced battery even when battery was okay. And has been towed to dealership multiple times. No reason given. No warning lights at all. Now finally I have been given a code after 2 years that there is a very small evap leak. Which the repair shop has informed me is a common issue with this car. Because of this. My car risks stalling out even while driving down the highway when I have plenty of fuel in the tank.

What caused me to realize my car had safety issues was roughly 6 months ago when my car died at the pump after turning on. It chugged for a good 3 seconds as the dash lights flickered and it stalled. I was able to just turn it off and restart it after 2+ tries, and I wondered if It was too hot or if I put premium in, just playing it off. I thought I let the car get too low on E too, so I didn't think too much about it at the time as it didn't seem to happen for quite some time again. I filled my car all the way full at the first occurrence and mcurrently gets 29.8mpg. It started being consistently a problem when I started to refill on half a tank of gas or lower. The car starts to work harder and you can feel it wanting to die while I'm driving. The battery light does not stay on or come on the dash after the car starts so I know it wasn't the alternator at the time either. I was parked on a slight incline at under a quarter tank and I had to put my car in neutral and roll start it. It wasn't drastic or anything but the car was being weird and idling hard, but my RPMs stayed at normal levels. It just was shaking after starting. That's when I realized that the gasoline tank was not only having issues after I pumped gas. My check engine finally came on and a valve sensor for the gas tank was signaled. The car seems to run harder after starting up and it finally died on me while I was parked and idling. The battery was replaced at 55,643, mi.; Check engine light signaled at 53,000 roughly. - The car is available upon request. - I currently own a 2017 Ford focus & I bought it certified used from a Dodge dealership in Northern Kentucky. - It didn't signal any warning lamps or other signs of failure until it hit 5 y.o. and after I refueled my tank. I started to panic because I was going to be late for work and I had no time for this. -My car has been serviced twice to confirm diagnosis; Once for a simple oil change & code reader, and then at a certified local repair.

Code p1450 canister value vacuum. I had this fixed last year, and it's back. Other vins for this model recalled but not mine. My Vin should be recalled.
My check engine light is on, had it diagnosed as P0171, my vehicle has been acting like it's going to stall while driving and consistently stalls after put gasoline in the car. I looked up what the P0171 code meant and it was for the Canister Purge Valve. There is a recall for this problem with the 2012-2017 Ford Focus. My problem is exactly as described by the manufacture in the recall and all the comments on several places where they talk about the exact same issue. I'm worried that my car will stall out while I'm driving it, It does try to stall when stopped at traffic lights. I looked up my VIN#[XXX] under the recall the NHTSA recall 18V735000, but my vin# comes up as no recall. I'm having the exact same problem with my Canister Purge Valve as the recall describes, currently I cannot get my car inspected because of this code. I need my car to get to work every day and also my daughter drives my car sometimes too and I'm worried that this car will stall while she's driving it and cause a serious accident. I HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE CANISTER PURGE VALVE. IN THE NHTSA SAFTY RECALL, IT DECRIBES PERFECTLY WHAT HAS BEEN GOING ON WITH THE CAR AND IS GETTING MUCH WORSE. AFTER PUTTING GAS IT STALLS EVERYTIME. SLUGGESH ACCELERATION..STRONG SMELL OF GAS AS PUTTING GAS IN TANK...EVERYTHING THE SAFETY RECALL DECRIBES IS WHATS HAPPENING. WHY WHY WHY IS MY VIN NOT LISTED WITH THE RECALL???? 2017 FORD FOCUS.
Faulty purge valve. Vehicle began to struggle restarting after each fuel fill-up. When vehicle had less than half a tank of gas, it would stall in slow traffic leaving the driver stranded on the road amongst moving cars. Contacted Ford dealer and was told that this vehicle was not under recall despite other 2017 Ford Focus being recalled for a problem with the purge valve. Upon further research, the recall addressed safety issues that were the same as what we were experiencing with our vehicle. Our local mechanic identified the problem as a faulty purge valve.
My 2017 Ford focus, after fill up the gas tank had difficulty to start on. . I went to the dealer about this issue because the check engine light has pop up, and had the issue each time when fill up the tank. They has told me that the issue was with the CANISTER PURGE VALVE, and will need replace it. I did and pay almost $400. I found in internet the below link that show: FORD MOTOR COMPANY ISSUES RECALL IN NORTH AMERICA FOR SELECT 2012-18 FORD FOCUS VEHICLES FOR MALFUNCTIONING CANISTER PURGE VALVE. https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2018/10/25/ford-motor-company-issues-recall-in-north-america-for-select-201.html For me is to much casual that my car in the same range of the year have the issue with the same part reported. Dealer has told me that my car do not have any recall but i think Cars like mine, have the same issue. Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

Every time I stop the vehicle to fill up the gas tank there are massive issues getting it restarted I am being told it is a faulty cpv valve and there are a huge amount of Fords that are being recalled for these bad cpv valves also occasionally happens while driving
Once, my Ford Focus stalled while driving at about 35 mph. Good thing I was in a neighborhood. It could of been worse. I know it wasn’t the battery because I had just replaced it. Also at a later time after refueling it didn’t want to restart. Then the check engine light turned on. Code read P1450. I took it to the dealership and they said the purge valve needed to be replaced. I did some homework and read that Ford, in 2018 issued a recall for approximately 1.5 million select 2012-18 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0-liter GDI and 2.0-liter GTDI engines for a malfunctioning canister purge valve. However, my Ford Focus didn’t have that recall.
My car stalled unexpectedly when I was parking it. For a while now, my car has jerked when I accelerate and sometimes shudders. My car stalled and died a few months back so I took it to the dealership and had it fixed. I soon realized, however, that the problem remained. I ignored it but my car stalled on me again and I had a hard time restarting it. I had just filled my gas tank up when it was running low and drove it for a while when the incident happened.

THERE IS CURRENTLY A RECALL ON 2017 FORD FOCUS VEHICLES FOR AN ISSUE WITH THE CANISTER PURGE VALVE, WHICH CAUSES STALLING WHILE DRIVING AND SIGNIFICANT SAFETY CONCERNS. MY 2017 FORD FOCUS HAS THIS EXACT ISSUE. HOWEVER, WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO SCHEDULE A RECALL SERVICE REPAIR AT MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP, THEY STATED IT WOULD NOT BE COVERED DESPITE THE RECALL AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET. SO FAR, I HAVE BEEN VERY LUCKY THAT MINE HAS ONLY STALLED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO START IT AND WHILE DRIVING ON CITY ROADS NEAR MY HOME, RATHER THAN WHILE I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY. I WAS ABLE TO DETERMINE THE PROBLEM BEFORE I ENDED UP IN A VERY DANGEROUS POSITION. I HAD BEEN HAVING INTERMITTENT ISSUES FOR SEVERAL WEEKS BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE ISSUE WAS. HOWEVER, BECAUSE THEY REFUSE TO REPAIR IT, MY VEHICLE IS STILL UNSAFE UNTIL I CAN GET IT REPAIRED MYSELF.

CANISTER PURGE VALVE IS NOT CLOSING CAUSING CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND CODE P1450
THE CAR HAS HAD MULTIPLE FUEL MALFUNCTIONS. THE FIRST ONE WAS THE PURGE VALVE WHICH I REPLACED. NOW THE CAR IS THROWING A CODE FOR A FUEL RAIL LOW PRESSURE AND STALLS OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING EVEN WHEN I'M ON THE INTERSTATE. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND I'VE NOTICED FORD HAS THE RECALL LISTED ON OTHER MODELS OF THE SAME YEAR BUT NOT MINE.
