Your brake pedal went all the way to the floor without providing stopping power, and the entire car locked up. When you pressed the brake pedal, it felt like something in the brake system fell apart inside. This brake failure caused you to hit another vehicle.

NHTSA #: 11689608

Filed: Aug 2020

Your brakes may suddenly fail when your ABS system activates during hard braking on rough roads or bumpy surfaces. When this happens, the brake pedal falls to the floor and you lose nearly all braking power until the system resets itself after some time—which could be minutes or even several drives later. This is especially dangerous on highway exit ramps or when hitting potholes while braking, as you'll be forced to drive with virtually no brakes until the problem resolves on its own. The issue appears to be a faulty valve in the ABS hydraulic control unit that doesn't seal properly, allowing brake fluid to bypass and lose pressure.

NHTSA #: 11352355
criticalSERVICE BRAKES
Filed: Jun 2020

Your brake pedal failed while driving at various speeds. The dealer diagnosed a faulty ABS (anti-lock brake system) and replaced it, but the problem happened again. The first failure occurred around 127,000 miles. Fixing this will likely require diagnosis and replacement of the ABS module or related brake system components.

Your car's starter has been hard to turn over for a while, and now your key is stuck in the ignition and the car won't start at all. This suggests both the starter motor and the ignition switch may need attention. A mechanic will likely need to inspect and possibly replace the starter motor and/or ignition cylinder.

Your trunk lid falls down on its own after you open it, dropping with force and speed. This has happened multiple times, and the owner was struck on the head and hand, resulting in cuts and concern about potential concussion. The trunk lid support system needs to be inspected and repaired to prevent injury.

Your driver's side door handle doesn't work from the outside—it feels like the handle isn't gripping the mechanism inside the door properly. You can still open the door from the inside without any problem. The issue appears to be with the door handle bracket assembly, which reportedly affects many Focus owners.

Your ignition cylinder may fail and prevent the car from starting, leaving you stranded. The problem typically occurs when you turn the key off and then try to start the engine again. While repairs can cost around $500, owners report the issue often returns within a few months, and there are no recalls available for this defect.

NHTSA #: 11490319
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: May 2020

Your ignition switch assembly has failed, preventing normal engine starting and operation. The ignition switch is the component you turn with your key to start the car, and when it malfunctions, your vehicle may not start reliably or at all. Replacing the ignition switch assembly should restore normal starting function.

You're having trouble inserting your key into the ignition to start your car. Even after replacing the ignition cylinder and ignition switch, the problem keeps coming back. A mechanic temporarily fixed it by installing cardboard as a workaround. The ignition system likely needs a more permanent repair or replacement to resolve the recurring jamming issue.

Your driver's side door swung open while you were driving on a city street. When you tried to close it, the door bounced back open repeatedly. After pulling over and trying multiple times, you got it shut, but now the door latch is stuck in the pulled position and won't open at all. This appears to be a broken door latch mechanism, and you cannot safely operate the vehicle until it's repaired.

Both of your front door latches have failed and won't open from the outside. This prevents normal entry to your vehicle from the front doors. The fix will likely involve replacing the door latch mechanisms on both front doors.

Your airbag warning light is on, and a diagnostic scan shows error code B2294 pointing to a faulty airbag control module. You believe your vehicle should be covered under a specific Ford safety recall (NHTSA #07V541000), but both NHTSA and Ford have indicated your car isn't included in that recall. Resolving this will likely require a technician to diagnose and repair or replace the faulty airbag control module.

Your airbag warning light has turned on while driving. This warning light indicates a problem with your airbag system that needs attention. The issue will likely require diagnostic testing to identify what's triggering the warning, which could range from a sensor malfunction to an electrical connection problem.

Power Train2 issues

Filed: Jun 2020

Your check engine light comes on while driving, causing a sudden loss of power and acceleration. The problem happens frequently—your car runs fine for 25-30 minutes at highway speeds, then the light appears and power drops dramatically. Turning the engine off and back on temporarily fixes it, but the light returns after another 25-30 minutes of driving. A throttle body sensor replacement was tried but only worked for 2 days before the problem returned, suggesting the throttle body itself may need replacement or cleaning.

Your 2008 Ford Focus may have a defective transmission. The owner who reported this issue no longer owns the vehicle, so the long-term outcome is unknown. A transmission repair or replacement would likely be necessary to resolve the problem.

Filed: Mar 2024

Your car overheated while driving, and the coolant temperature warning light came on. A mechanic found a coolant leak and discovered the subframe was severely corroded and dangerously thin, making the vehicle unsafe to drive. The mechanic will likely need to replace the coolant system components and potentially reinforce or replace the corroded subframe.

Filed: Oct 2023

Your steering wheel wobbles and your car pulls hard to the right. A technician found that your driver's side front tire has severe tread separation, and your passenger side front tire is starting to separate and shows cupping (scalloped wear patterns). Both tires are failing well before their 65,000-mile rating, with only 34,000 miles of wear. Your tires may need to be replaced due to premature failure.

Your gas pedal is responding to acceleration normally but the car is decelerating on its own without you taking your foot off the pedal. Your brake booster isn't working properly, which affects how hard you need to press the brake pedal. Additionally, your engine is shaking and losing power. These issues likely involve replacing the brake booster, checking the engine for vacuum leaks or internal problems, and inspecting fuel delivery and ignition components.

Filed: Jan 2021

Your ignition switch is getting stuck and making it difficult to start your car. Your check engine light is on due to a catalytic converter issue, which is preventing your engine from venting exhaust properly. You may need to have the ignition switch replaced and the catalytic converter inspected or replaced to resolve these issues.

highWHEELS
Filed: Feb 2020

Your rear tires are wearing out very quickly and becoming bald, even after a recent alignment and new tires. This is causing your car to handle like a rear-wheel-drive vehicle on wet roads, and your back end slides when you hit even small bumps. This pattern has happened repeatedly over the past 2 years despite getting alignments and new tires. The issue likely involves investigating the suspension geometry or suspension components that are causing premature tire wear.
