IT'S A BADLY DESIGNED BRAKING SYSTEM THAT FAILS AT ANY TIME, PUTTING LIVES OF PEOPLE UNDER DANGEROUS CONDITIONS. MORE OFTEN THEN NOT THOSE FAILURES ARE OCCURRING AT LOW SPEEDS. BRAKE FAILURE IS MOST COMMON PROBLEM ON FORD ESCAPE CARS THAT LOOKS LIKE OCCURRING MUCH MORE OFTEN THEN EVEN ON REST OF FORD VEHICLES.

I LOOKED ONLINE AND THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE FOR THE SAME YEAR MAKE UP MY CAR.

WHILE DRIVING IT WILL SHUT DOWN THE TURN SIGNALS, BREAK LIGHTS, AND CLIMATE CONTROLS AND SHUT OFF THE RADIO. I'VE NARROWLY AVOIDED MANY COLLISIONS DUE TO HAVING NO TURN SIGNALS AND BREAK LIGHTS AT NIGHT AND THROUGHOUT THE DAY. I'VE TALKED TO OTHER OWNERS OF THE MODEL YEARS IN QUESTION AND ALL SEEM TO SHARE SIMILAR EXPERIENCES SOME ENDING IN ACCIDENTS AND OTHERS PAYING THOUSANDS OUT OF POCKET FOR FAULTY PCM'S OR ELECTRICAL WIRING TO THE IGNITION. IT HAPPENS RANDOMLY WHEN DRIVING OR WHEN THE CAR IS OFF AND IN PARK I FEEL AS IF THIS IS AN ISSUE FORD IS AWARE OF AS I'VE TALKED TO ALMOST 1,000 PEOPLE ALL SHARING SIMILAR ISSUES AND UPON TAKING THEM TO THE DEALER IT'S COSTED $500-$2,000 DEPENDING WHAT THE DEALERS CAME UP WITH SOME BEING THE PCM OTHERS BEING THE WIRING TO THE IGNITION, SOME BEING A BAD FUSE BOX AND THE DEALERS JUST THROW PARTS AT IT TO JUST HAVE THE ISSUE COME BACK 6 MONTHS DOWN THE ROAD AND THEN TRY TO SAY NOW IT'S SOMETHING ELSE AND IT'S GOING TO BE ANOTHER $500-$2,000 IN PARTS OR TRY AND PUSH THE OWNER TO A NEW VEHICLE. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL FORD DEALER AND HE SAID THEY AREN'T EQUIPPED TO DO THIS KIND OF WORK THAT I'LL NEED TO GO TO A HUB DEALERSHIP AND IT WOULD BE ABOUT $400 JUST TO DIAGNOSE WITH HAVING TO PULL THE DASH, STEERING COLUMN AND CHECK THE PCM. THEN IT'D BE PARTS AND LABOR TO FIX THE ISSUE IF THE FIND ANYTHING WRONG BUT I WOULDN'T BE NOTIFIED TILL AFTER THE REPAIRS WERE COMPLETED.

BOUGHT MY 2009 FORD ESCAPE XLT 4WD IN 2016.HAD NO PROBLEMS UP UNTIL AROUND MARCH, 2017 WHEN TRYING TO START VEHICLE.TURNED THE KEY TO START AND IT WOULDN'T. THINKING MAYBE THERE WAS A LITTLE MOISTURE ON IGNITION KEY SEEING HOW IT HAD RAINED EARLER AND KEYS WERE EXPOSED BUT NOPE.PULLED KEY OUT AND FLIPPED IT OVER THEN RETRIED. IT DID START AND DIDN'T THINK ANYMORE ABOUT IT. DIDN'T HAPPEN AGAIN TILL ABOUT 4 MOS LATER AND HAS GRADUALLY GOTTEN WORSE OVER TIME. NOW HAVE TO MAKE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS...UP TO 5-6 TIMES OTHER DAY BEFORE IT STARTED. JUST BY CHANCE I HAD PUSHED THE IGNITION KEY FURTHER IN THE START POSITION AND FELT KEY SLIP INTO IGNITION A "HAIR" MORE. IT STARTED UP IMMEDIATELY. THOUGHT THAT MAYBE ORIGINAL KEY WAS GETTING WORN AND THAT WAS WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS BUT AFTER READING MANY OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT EXACT SAME ISSUE IT SHOWS THAT THERE IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM AND FORD NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS. I HAVE TO TRAVEL ALONE WHEN OUT OF STATE FOR DR VISITS OR FAMILY MATTERS. WOULD SAY THIS CAN BECOME A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE ESPECIALLY FOR A FAMILY.

FORD HAD A FIELD SERVICE ACTION ON THIS ISSUE IS A FAULTY ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY MALFUNCTION THAT NEVER MADE IT AS A RECALL. I TRIED TO GET FORD TO RESTART THIS FIELD SERVICE AS THEY SAID MY WIFE'S CAR WAS PAST THE WARRANTY. NEEDS TO BE AS A RECALL NOT A FIELD SERVICE COMPLAINT SHE COULD HAVE BEEN SEVERELY INJURED OR DIED FROM THIS I AM OUT $150 AND HALF DAY OF WORK TO FIX THIS BECAUSE FORD WON'T DO A RECALL TO SAVE THEIR ASS.

KEY IGNITION SWITCH IS DIFFICULT TO WORK. AFTER TURNING TO THE START POSITION YOU HAVE TO PUSH THE KEY IN FOR THE VEHICLE TO START. THIS STARTED ABOUT A YEAR AGO AND THE PROBLEM HAS GOT WORST TO THE POINT THAT IT CAN TAKE UP TO 10 TRIES AND 3 OR 4 MINUTES TO GET IT STARTED .YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PUNCH THE KEY IN HARD (ESPECIALLY US WITH ARTHRITIS) THEN TURN TO GET STARTED. THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME I TRY TO START THE CAR AND EXTREMELY STRESSFUL WHEN AWAY FROM HOME. THIS IS A COMMON FLAW OF THIS CAR AND MUST BE FIXED BY FORD.

I REQUEST THE NHTSA RECALL THE 09 FORD ESCAPE FOR THIS ISSUE ASAP.

THIS HAS BEEN REPORTED T HUNDREDS OF OTHER DRIVERS WITH THE SAME VEHICLE AND SO FAR NO MECHANIC OR EVEN THE FORD DEALERSHIP CAN PIN POINT THE CAUSE. OTHER PEOPLE HAVE BEEN REPORTING THIS SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR CARS WITH ONLY 30,000 MILES AND OTHERS HAVE REPRTED THAT THE CAR STALLS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND I AM NOW AFRAID IT WILL ESCALATE.

REPLACED STARTER, TUMBLER AND IGNITION MODULE. 5 MONTHS LATER SAME EVENT OCCURRED. STARTER CONTINUOUSLY ENGAGED, SMOKE AND SPARKS FROM REPLACED STARTER. MECHANIC REPLACED STARTER, STARTER SOLENOID AND IGNITION MODULE LOCATED DIRECTLY BEHIND IGNITION TUMBLER. STILL HAVING SAME ISSUE WITH STARTER RUNNING CONTINUOUSLY, MECHANIC SUSPECTS POSSIBLE WIRING HARNESS COMPROMISED FROM PREVIOUS HIGH VOLTAGE DRAIN DAMAGE. REPLACEMENT OF WIRING HARNESS MAY BE THE ONLY OPTION TO CORRECT ISSUE.

I SWITCHED TO MY SPARE KEY, THINKING THE ORIGINAL MIGHT BE WORN. IT DID START EASIER THE FIRST FEW TIMES BUT NOW IT'S BACK TO ALMOST NOT STARTING AT ALL, AND TAKES A FEW TRIES, AGAIN YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE KEY JUST RIGHT OR PUSH JUST EXACTLY FOR IT TO START. SEPTEMBER 10 2014, VEHICLE WAS SERVICED AT HENRY CURTIS FORD IN PETALUMA CALIFORNIA FOR RECALL 14S05. PRIOR TO THIS RECALL, WE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH OUR VEHICLE. OCTOBER 3 2014, VEHICLE STALLED AT 65 MPH DRIVING ON HIGHWAY. MY WIFE WAS DRIVING UP HILL ON THE HIGHWAY IN THE FAR RIGHT LANE AND WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE HIGHWAY TO THE SHOULDER. VEHICLE TOWED TO REPAIR SHOP, UNABLE TO FIND ANY ERROR CODES. VEHICLE TOWED TO HENRY CURTIS FORD DEALERSHIP IN PETALUMA CALIFORNIA WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED NEW IN 2008. A $145 DIAGNOSTIC WAS DONE AND ONLY ONE ERROR CODE WAS REPORTED BY THE DEALER. CODE B1239 ( AIR FLOW BLEND DOOR DRIVER CIRCUIT FAILURE). VEHICLE COULD BE DRIVEN AS THERE WERE NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS ON AT THAT TIME. WE PICKED UP THE VEHICLE FROM HENRY CURTIS FORD, AND DROVE HOME. OCTOBER 10 2014. RPM'S SHIFTING UP AND DOWN WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 65MPH. HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO REPAIR SHOP IN SAN FRANCISCO. SERVICED AND REPLACED PARTS FOR B1239 ERROR. MECHANIC TEST DROVE VEHICLE AND NOW ANOTHER ERROR CODE DISPLAYS CODE P2112. P2112 FORD - THROTTLE ACTUATOR CONTROL SYSTEM ERROR. THE MECHANIC IS REPLACING THE THROTTLE BODY AND REPROGRAMMING THE PCM. I CALLED THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD MY VIN IS NOT COVERED UNDER ANY RECALLS FOR P2112. WHEN I ASKED ABOUT CONSUMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM 13N03, I WAS TOLD MY VIN IS NOT INCLUDED. WE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO BRINGING IT IN FOR THE RECALL 14S05. NOW AFTER THAT SERVICE WE ARE HAVING SEVERAL PROBLEMS AND I HAVE READ THAT OTHER VEHICLE OWNERS ARE ALSO HAVING THE SAME P2112 ERROR. FORD SHOULD INCLUDE OUR VEHICLE IN THIS PROBLEM AND SEE IF THE OTHER TWO INCIDENTS WE HAVE ARE RELATED SOME HOW. VEHICLE HAS HAD ISSUES WITH THE DASHBOARD GAUGES LOCKING UP WHILE DRIVING, TOOK TO FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY COULD NOT IDENTIFY CAUSE OF ISSUE. IF I HIT THE DASH IT GAUGES WOULD START TO WORK AGAIN. WHEN GAUGES WERE NOT WORKING, A/C WOULD STOP WORKING AS WELL. MOST CONCERNING IS THE LAST TWO DAYS MY CAR HAS STOPPED ACCELERATING WHILE DRIVING IT, I CAN PUT THE GAS ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AND IT STILL WON'T ACCELERATE. WHILE DRIVING MY 2009 FORD ESCAPE (V6) HOME FROM WORK, MY CAR LOST ACCELERATION. THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING, THE LIGHTS STILL WORKED, RADIO ON, POWER STEERING, BUT I HAD NO ACCELERATION RESPONSE FROM THE GAS PEDAL. I WAS ABLE TO COAST MY CAR ONTO A SIDE ROAD WITHOUT INCIDENT, AND NOTICED THE SERVICE LIGHT WAS ON BEFORE TURNING MY CAR OFF (WRENCH SYMBOL). I WAITED FOR A FEW MOMENTS, AND TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR. TO MY SURPRISE, THE CAR STARTED UP IMMEDIATELY, AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE HOME WITHOUT FURTHER ISSUE. I TOOK THE CAR TO A LOCAL AUTO SHOP TO HAVE THE COMPUTER CHECKED TO SEE IF THE ERROR WAS STILL IN THE SYSTEM, BUT IT WAS ALREADY CLEARED. TWO WEEKS LATER, WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM A VACATION WEEKEND, THE CAR DID THE SAME THING, EXCEPT THIS TIME I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 70MPH, THREE HOURS FROM HOME WITH MY SON IN THE BACK SEAT. TO SAY I WAS RATTLED WOULD BE AN UNDERSTATEMENT. I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY, TURN THE CAR OFF, RESTART THE CAR AND REJOIN TRAFFIC. ROUGHLY 1 HOUR LATER, THE SAME THING HAPPENED. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE CAR TO THE NEAREST FORD DEALERSHIP AND DROPPED THE CAR OFF FOR INSPECTION AND SERVICE. THE DEALER WAS ABLE TO PINPOINT THE ISSUE TO THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY, AND DETERMINED IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. $375 AND 24 HOURS LATER THE CAR WAS FIXED. NO ISSUES AFTER HAVING THE CAR BACK IN MY POSSESSION FOR TWO WEEKS. I WANTED TO ISSUE AN OFFICIAL COMPLAINT, AND EXPRESS MY DISSATISFACTION WITH FORD MOTOR COMPANY FOR KNOWING ABOUT THIS SAFETY ISSUE, AND DRAGGING THEIR FEET ON ISSUANCE OF A RECALL. THE DELPHI MANUFACTURED COMPONENT WAS KNOWN TO BE FLAWED, AND HAD ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (TSB) 09-23-5, AND RE-ENGINEERED THE COMPONENT. TODAY I WAS CONTACTED AND TOLD THE PART WAS ON NATION WIDE BACKORDER, AND WASN'T EXPECTED UNTIL 10/31. INTERNET FORUMS SUGGEST THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF VEHICLES AWAITING THIS PART RIGHT NOW. HAVING THE ENGINE UNPREDICTABLY SHUT OFF IS A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION TO HAVE WHILE DRIVING. THERE IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITHIN FORD AND THEIR DEALER NETWORK, BUT TO DATE, NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED. I HAD COMPLETED APPROXIMATELY 14 OF THOSE MILES, TRAVELING ON A FOUR LANE DIVIDED HIGHWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH AND ON CRUISE CONTROL. WITHOUT WARNING, THE CAR SHUT DOWN. THE MOTOR CONTINUED TO RUN AT SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED POWER...ENOUGH TO POWER THE POWER STEERING AND BRAKES AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEM...BUT NOT THE VEHICLE. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO STEER OFF OF THE HIGHWAY AND ACCESS THE SITUATION. THIS FAILURE HAD NEVER OCCURRED PREVIOUSLY WITH THIS VEHICLE. A WRENCH LIGHT WAS NOW APPEARING ON THE CONTROL PANEL AND THE CAR WAS BARELY RUNNING. I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND SHUT IT DOWN. THEN I TURNED THE KEY AND IT RESTARTED AND SEEMED TO RUN FINE. I CONTINUED THE JOURNEY HOPING IT WAS A ONE-TIME GLITCH. THAT SAME AFTERNOON AT APPROXIMATELY 4 PM, I STARTED MY RETURN TRIP HOME. I DID HAVE SLIGHT FORWARD MOMENTUM THAT WAS JERKY AND I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I TURNED THE CAR OFF, SAT FOR A FEW MINUTES, THEN TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR. THE CAR DID START AND NO WARNING LIGHTS WERE ON THE DASHBOARD. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE TO MY SUBDIVISION WITHOUT INCIDENT BUT ONCE I TURNED INTO MY NEIGHBORHOOD THE CAR STALLED AGAIN. THE CAR WAS THEN TOWED TO MY FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE I WAS TOLD THE THROTTLE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. SINCE THE THROTTLE IS CONSIDERED AN ELECTRICAL COMPONENT IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY. THE BILL WAS APPROXIMATELY $670. WHILE TRAVELING AT 70MPH, VEHICLE SUDDENLY STALLED WHILE DRIVING IN THE CENTER LANE OF A HIGHWAY IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. NO WARNING SIGNS WERE DISPLAYED. AFTER PULLING TO THE SHOULDER, VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE RESTARTED AND SEEMED TO BE FINE. SERVICE TECHNICIAN FOUND A FAILURE CODE FOR 'THROTTLE STUCK CLOSED' WITH 'FREEZE DATA' SHOWING IT HAPPENED AT 71MPH. HE INSPECTED THE THROTTLE AND FOUND NO PROBLEMS. AS A PRECAUTION, HE CLEANED THE THROTTLE BLADE WITH A CLEANING WIPE. A WEEK LATER, THE VEHICLE STALLED AGAIN AS I WAS PULLING INTO TRAFFIC. IN ORDER TO KEEP THE VEHICLE RUNNING, I THEN NEEDED TO KEEP MY FOOT ON BOTH THE GAS AND BRAKE WHILE AT STOPS. RETURN TO MY TECHNICIAN AND HE DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A DEFECTIVE THROTTLE BODY. HE SAID THAT THE COMPUTER DATA SHOWED THE THROTTLE OPEN ONLY 52% WHEN THE THROTTLE WAS WIDE OPEN. VEHICLE HAS NOT YET BEEN REPAIRED. *TR

ON 7/17/2011 WHILE DRIVING FROM EDEN PRAIRIE, MN TO HOME IN HASTINGS, MN WHILE STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC SIGNAL I, ALONG WITH MY WIFE AND GRANDDAUGHTER, SMELLED A ODOR LIKE BURNING PLASTIC. I PULLED INTO A NEARBY PARKING LOT AND WE GOT OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND I INVESTIGATED THE ODOR. I WAS ABLE TO DETERMINE THAT THE ODOR WAS ORIGINATING FROM THE DASH PANEL. SHE WAS ALSO UNABLE TO GAIN ACCESS FROM THE FLOOR BOARD IN THE REAR SEAT. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 17,000.
