PURCHASED THIS PRE-OWNED WITH ONLY 40K MILES. IT'S NOW ONLY AT 45K MILES AND RANDOMLY THE ABS LIGHT AND SERVICE BRAKES NOTIFICATION CAME ON THE DASHBOARD. TOOK IT TO A GARAGE AND HAD THEM SCAN AND IT SEEMS TO BE ABS RELATED. STILL HAVE NO REPAIRED BUT FROM READING ALL OVER FORUMS, REDDIT, GOOGLE SEARCHES, AND MORE THIS SEEMS TO BE AN EXTREMELY COMMON PROBLEM THAT COSTS A TON TO REPAIR. FORD SHOULD HANDLE THIS AS A RECALL IF IT IS A REGULAR ISSUE WITH THIS MAKE AND MODEL. HOW IS THERE NO CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT YET? IT SEEMS COUNTLESS PEOPLE ARE MENTIONING THAT THE BRAKES OUTRIGHT FAILED WHILE DRIVING ON THE ROAD OR EVEN HIGHWAYS. WHAT IF SOMEONE DIES? THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.
HELLO, I HAVE A 2007 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID. THE CAR IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION INSIDE AND OUT EXCEPT FOR THE BRAKING SYSTEM. THE BRAKING SYSTEM HAS BEEN SYSTEMATICALLY HARD TO PRESS THE PEDAL SINCE I HAVE OWNED IT DUE TO BEING A HYBRID, HOWEVER, THE BRAKING SYSTEM IS FAILING AS OF 2 DAYS AGO. CONSISTENT WITH MANY, MANY OTHER FORD ESCAPE HYBRIDS, THE BRAKING SYSTEM WARNING LIGHTS, ABS WARNING LIGHTS AND BRAKE SYSTEM SERVICE WARNING WILL SPORADICALLY ENGAGE ON THE VEHICLE. EVEN WITHOUT THE WARNING LIGHTS, THIS VEHICLES BRAKES WILL NOW FAIL, OFTEN DROPPING COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR OF THE VEHICLE WITHOUT WARNING. AS THE BRAKES ARE A VITAL COMPONENT OF THE VEHICLE THE FAILURE HAS COME DURING CRITICAL TIMES, VIA STOP SIGNS, STOP LIGHTS, STOPPED TRAFFIC, NEARLY CAUSING SERIOUS INJURIES OR FATALITIES. WHEN THE WARNING LIGHTS ENGAGE, THE BRAKING PEDAL IS HARD, BUT DOES FAIL AS WELL. AN IMMEDIATE SERVICE PERFORMED AT THE LOCAL GARAGE DETERMINED THE CAR MALFUNCTIONING BRAKE SYSTEM IS DUE TO THE MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER AND HYDRAULIC BRAKE PUMP, CONNECTED TO THE HYBRID SYSTEM WHICH IS HIGHLY CONSISTENT WITH ALL EARLY MODEL FORD ESCAPES. REPAIR ESTIMATES EXCEED $5000-7000 USD. THE BRAKING PROBLEM WITH THE EARLY GENERATION FORD ESCAPE PROBLEMS IS ENDEMIC, AND DESERVING OF ADDITIONAL SCRUTINY AND ATTENTION FROM THE NTHSA. THESE CARS ARE DEADLY AS SET, AND THANKFULLY MY FAMILY HAS NOT HAD AN ACCIDENT OR DEATH. PLEASE GIVE THESE VEHICLES ADDITIONAL SCRUTINY, AS IT IS NOT OBSCURE TO SEE WIDESPREAD BRAKING MALFUNCTIONS NATIONWIDE. FORD WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM.
MY WIFE APPROACHED A STOP SIGN AT 15 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT STOPPING WHEN BRAKES APPLIED. SHE THOUGHT THE ACCELERATOR WAS STUCK. SHE MANAGED TO RETURN HOME. I INSPECTED THE CAR AND FOUND THE FRONT RIGHT BRAKE HOSE RUPTURED, THE BRAKE RESERVOIR DRAINED TO THE SEPARATING PARTITION. THE FAILED HOSE HAD RUPTURED AT THE STRUT ATTACH BRACKET, OBVIOUSLY A FLEX POINT. THERE WERE OTHER FAILURE POINTS IN THE HOSE RUBBER COATING VISIBLE. I REPLACED THE HOSE AND INSPECTED THE FRONT LEFT HOSE. SAME FAILURE PATTERN, VERY EARLY LEAKAGE NOTED AT THE BODY HARDLINE CONNECTION AND THE STRUT ATTACH BRACKET. I REPLACED THAT HOSE AS WELL. REAR HOSES APPEARED COMPLETELY INTACT AND NO ISSUES NOTED. 71,600 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. THIS IS A SERIOUS COMMON ISSUE ACROSS THE FORD ESCAPE LINE WHICH IS ALSO SOLD AS THE MAZDA TRIBUTE. NHTSA NOTES ONLY ONE INCIDENT, I FOUND 38 ON ONE SITE ALONE, HTTPS://WWW.CARPROBLEMZOO.COM/FORD/ESCAPE/BRAKE-HOSES-LINES-PIPING-AND-FITTINGS-PROBLEMS.PHP A FAILURE OF ONE SYSTEM PUTS ALL THE PRESSURE ON THE REMAINING SYSTEM. AS SEEN IN OUR CASE THE REMAINING SYSTEM WAS SEVERELY COMPROMISED. I FIND IT DEEPLY DISTURBING THAT NHTSA HAS NOTHING IN THE RECALL ARENA ON THIS YET HAS 2 MINOR RECALLS, ONE BEING FOR AFTER MARKET AIRBAG -SEAT COVER INTERFERENCE ISSUES. REALLY? PERHAPS IF THE BRAKES WORK THE AIRBAG WOULDN'T BE DEPLOYED? I HAVE SEVERAL MORE PICTURES IF NEEDED.

QUICK INTERNET SEARCH REVEALS THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM IN FORD ESCAPE HYBRID VEHICLES, BUT FORD REFUSES TO REPAIR THE OBVIOUSLY FAULTY UNITS. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ON ALL UNITS, OR AT LEAST FREE REPAIR FOR FAILED UNITS. THE REPLACEMENT IS MORE THAN THE VEHICLE IS WORTH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE EXCITER RING WAS FRACTURED. THE MECHANIC ATTEMPTED TO GLUE THE PIECE BACK TOGETHER, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 141,000.
BRAKE FAILURE. PULLING UP TO A STOP SIGN, APPLIED BRAKES, VEHICLE STARTED SLOWING. BRAKES RELEASED AND I HAD TO SLAM MY FOOT ALL THE WAY DOWN TO GET THE CAR TO STOP. BROUGHT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND AM TOLD THERE IS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN REGARDING THIS ISSUE.
FAILURE OF ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM WHILE DRIVING ON CITY STREET. POOR BRAKING PERFORMANCE. PROPOSED REPAIR IS TO REPLACE HYDRAULIC ABS UNIT AT A COST OF $5400. VEHICLE HAS ONLY 104,000 MILES AND COULD BE DRIVEABLE IF REPAIRED. I SEE FROM THE NHTSA WEBSITE THAT OTHER OWNERS HAVE HAD THIS EXACT PROBLEM.
THE BRAKES FAILED AT A STOP SIGN AND SENT MY DAUGHTER INTO TRAFFIC THAT WAS GOING 50 MPH. FORTUNATELY SHE PUT IT IN REVERSE AND GOT OUT BEFORE AN ACCIDENT WAS CAUSED. THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND MECHANIC SAYS IT WILL COST OVER $4000 TO FIX. AFTER RESEARCH WE SEE THAT HUNDREDS OF OTHERS HAVE HAD THIS EXACT PROBLEM. HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT IS FAULTY AND A BAD DESIGN THAT RECURS.
I HAVE A 2007 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID WITH 92518 MILES ON IT. THE BREAK LIGHTS COME ON AND THEN IT HAS LITTLE BREAKS.IT DOES THIS INTERMITTENTLY. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THE HCU WAS BAD AND THAT IT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AND THAT IT WAS GOING TO COST ME $6000 - $7000 TO HAVE IT FIXED.I PUT A USED HCU ON IT AND THEY SAID THAT ONE WAS ALSO BAD. I HAVE OWNED MANY CARS OVER THE YEARS AND I HAVE NEVER HAD TO PUT AN HCU ON BEFORE.I GOT ON LINE AND THIS SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM. THE ABS LIGHT GOES ON AND I HAVE MINIMUM BRAKES. WHEN ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT GOES ON I HAVE ALMOST NO BRAKES AND I END UP SKIDDING WHEN STOPPING. I HAVE HAVE MULTIPLE NEAR MISSES AND BURNED RUBBER TRYING TO STOP. THESE LIGHTS ARE SPORADIC BUT THEY COME ON AT LEAST 90% OF THE TIME. WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE OFF, THE BRAKES ARE FINE. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO MY MECHANIC AND HE SAID THERE IS NOTHING THAT THEY CAN DO BECAUSE MY BRAKES ARE FINE WHEN THEY CHECK IT. THEY ALSO SAID THAT IT LOOKS LIKE ITS THE ELECTRICAL UNIT THAT IS ON BACK ORDER AND NOT EVEN AVAILABLE. THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM FROM MANY FORD OWNERS AND THAT I SHOULD FILE A COMPLAINT TO HAVE THIS RECALLED.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 107,000.

THE BRAKE TRAVEL SENSOR IS THE PROBLEM AND FROM WHAT I'VE READ, MOST PEOPLE WITH THIS CAR HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM. FORD REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS SAFETY HAZARD. I HAVE REPLACED THE ABS TONE RINGS IN MY VEHICLE 3 TIMES IN THE LAST 4 YEARS. TWO OF THE TIMES IT BROKE I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE. I WAS ON A MAJOR ROAD WHEN THIS HAPPENED. BRAKE LIGHTS OFF AND AUTO SHOP CAN NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. SYSTEM IS LIFE THREATENING AND FORD SHOULD RECALL ALL CARS ESPECIALLY HYBRIDS TO REPLACE BRAKES. ONCE DRIVING YOUR ABS SYSTEM IS DEACTIVATED CAUSING THE CAR TO JUST SLIDE WHEN PRESSING ON THE BRAKES. AN OBDI CODE READER INDICATES C1478, C1479, AND C1480. FORD RECOMMENDS CHANGING HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT COSTING OVER 5 THOUSAND DOLLARS. WHEN UNLOCKING THE CAR OR TURNING THE KEY IGNITION TO THE ON POSITION YOU HEAR THE BRAKES TRYING TO BUILD UP PRESSURE AND THEN YOU HEAR A LOUD GRINDING NOISE AND THAT IS WHEN ALL THE MESSAGES APPEAR ON THE DASH. THIS SEEMS TO BE A REOCCURRING ISSUE WITH FORD ESCAPE HYBRIDS MADE FROM 2005 THROUGH 2008 ACCORDING TO MANY CUSTOMERS. NO RECALL YET.
THE BRAKES DO NOT WORK. THERE IS LITTLE TO NO BRAKING POWER WHEN DEPRESSING THE BRAKE, AND THE BRAKES FEEL STIFF TO ENGAGE. ONE SHOP FIXED ALL MY ROTORS AND PADS AND A CALIPER, BUT THE BRAKES STILL DID NOT FUNCTION. THEY TOLD ME I HAD TO GO TO A DEALER TO GET THE BRAKES BLED... NOTHING ELSE COULD BE DONE. SO I TOOK IT TO A FORD DEALER AND THEY SAID IT WOULD COST OVER $4000 TO FIX. THE MAIN ABS CONTROL UNIT AND HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT WERE WHAT THE COMPUTERS SAID WERE THE PROBLEM. AFTER SOME PLEADING, THEY AGREED TO TRY A USED PART FOR ONLY $900. AFTER INSTALLING THE USED PART, THE BRAKES STILL DID NOT FUNCTION. I WAS TOLD THE FORD MAIN HELP LINE SAID ONLY NEW PARTS WOULD FIX IT... TECHNICIANS TRIED TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM FURTHER BUT EVENTUALLY SAID THE ONLY THING THEY COULD DO IS INSTALL THE NEW PARTS FOR THE HEFTY PRICE. *TT *AS

I HAVE 2 SMALL CHILDREN IN MY CAR AND DRIVE 20 MILES EACH WAY EVERYDAY TO WORK AND THEIR SCHOOL, THIS IS NOT SAFE!! THE LIGHTS GO AND AND THEN OFF THE NEXT TIME, WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE OFF, THE BRAKES ARE JUST FINE! THERE IS SOMETHING DEFECTIVE HERE THAT IS HAPPENING AND MY MECHANIC CANNOT FIGURE IT OUT!!! THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR 7 MONTHS NOW!! I WILL SUBMIT THE DATE BELOW OF THE LAST TIME IT HAPPENED.

CONSIDERING I HAD THE FORD DEALER IN MADISON, OH CHECK VEHICLE FROM TOP TO BOTTOM (SAFETY CHECK) IN JAN. 2016 THEY REPLACED THE FRONT ROTORS & BRAKE SHOES AND DEEMED EVERYTHING ELSE IN PERFECT CONDITION. ANYWAY CAR WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER IN CAREY NC THEY SAID NEEDS COMPLETE BRAKING SYSTEM REPLACED AT A COST OF $4,800. AFTER RESEARCHING I HAVE FOUND (HUNDREDS) OF PEOPLE IN MY SITUATION DESCRIBING EXACTLY THE SAME ISSUES! SHAME ON FORD FOR NOT ALLOWING A RECALL! I CANT AFFORD THE PRICEY REPAIRS AND CAN'T AFFORD ANOTHER CAR! SO SORRY I REPLACED A HONDA CIVIC WITH 239,000 MILES WITH THIS HUNK OF JUNK ESCAPE HYBRID!!!! THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE THAT CAN HAVE A TERRIBLE OUTCOME.

GO FOR DIAGNOSIS; AFTERWARD NO BRAKES AND HYBRID ASSIST MESSAGE APPEARS. CAR IS NO LONGER OPERABLE. ALL BRAKE INCIDENTS OCCURRED ON CITY STREETS OR IN DRIVEWAY ON STARTING. DIAGNOSIS: MASTER CYLINDER NEEDS REPLACING AND PROBABLY HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT AS WELL. TOTAL COST FOR PARTS BEFORE LABOR $6,000,APPROXIMATELY THE SAME AS THE VALUE OF THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE OF THESE PARTS IS APPARENTLY A COMMON AND WELL KNOWN PROBLEM THAT FORD REFUSES TO ADDRESS.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED AS THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUAFACTUER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. UNLIKE VACUUM ASSIST IN A NON-HYBRID VEHICLE (WHEN IN THE CASE OF FAILURE YOU CAN STILL STILL STOP FAIRLY QUICKLY WITH EXTREME FOOT PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL) WITH THE ESCAPE HYBRID, NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL, YOU ARE LIMITED TO ABOUT 10% OF NORMAL BRAKING FORCE. DIAGNOSTIC ERROR CODE WAS C1477. FORD DOCUMENTED FIX IS TO TRY BLEEDING THE BRAKE SYSTEM AND SEE IF THAT WORKS. IF NOT REPLACE ABS MODULE AND HCU. DEALER SAID BLEEDING SYSTEM WOULD BE $900. IF THAT DID NOT WORK REPLACE ABS MODULE/HCU FOR AN ADDITIONAL $4500. SO, TRY BLEEDING THE BRAKES, RIDE AROUND FOR A MONTH OR TWO TO SEE IF PROBLEM RETURNS. THIS HAS HAPPENED NOW FOR THE 5TH TIME (I AM AT 78,239 MILES ON THE CAR). THIS TIME MY BRAKES WENT OUT ENTIRELY WITH NO WARNING. THANKFULLY I WAS GOING VERY SLOW IN A NEIGHBORHOOD. THE DEALER HAS INSTRUCTED ME THAT THE CAR REQUIRES A NEW MASTER CYLINDER AND A NEW HCU. THE COST OF THIS WAS QUOTED AT $6800. WITHOUT THIS FIX MY CAR IS UNSAFE AND NOT DRIVABLE.
I WAS DRIVING HOME IN ROUTE 94 VERNON NJ THE BRAKE LIGHT AND THE ABS LIGHT WENT ON, AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS HIGH BUT NO BRAKES, THE REGENERATIVE BRAKES WERE DISABLED, THE ENGINE TURN OFF AND I FOUND MYSELF DRIVING ONLY WITH THE ELECTRICAL MOTOR AND NO BRAKES AFTER I PULL OVER TURN OFF THE CAR. A WEEK LATTER THE SAME THING HAPPENED AND I ALMOST T-BONED A CAR. A VERY LOUD SOUND WAS COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE CAR. I SHUT THE CAR OFF AND THE SYSTEM "RESET". 2002 FORD ESCAPE. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO ABS RECALL NOTICE. *SMD THE CONSUMER TOOK HIS DAUGHTERS VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, AFTER RECEIVING A RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL. THE CONSUMER INFORMED THE SERVICE ADVISOR, THE ABS LIGHT HAD BEEN COMING ON AND GOING OFF FOR A WHILE. UPON THE RETURN OF THE VEHICLE, THE ABS LIGHT WAS ON CONTINUOUSLY. THE CONSUMER RETURNED TO THE SERVICE DESK AND REPORTED THE ISSUE AND HE WAS INFORMED HE COULD LEAVE THE VEHICLE FOR DIAGNOSIS, BUT THERE WOULD BE A FEE OF $ 130.00. THE CONSUMER REFUSED AND THEN TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP. THE LOCAL REPAIR SHOP INFORMED THE CONSUMER, THE PROBLEM THEY WERE ENCOUNTERING WAS AN ABS CODE B1676 WHICH WAS A RESULT OF NO ELECTRICAL POWER TO THE ABS MODULE. THE REPAIR SHOP STATED, BECAUSE THE LIGHT WOULD NO LONGER GO OUT, THAT THE CURRENT SITUATION WAS CAUSED BY PERFORMING THE WORK ON THE RECALL. THEY ALSO EXPLAINED, THAT THE RECALL THAT WAS PERFORMED WAS TO ADD POWER TO THE JUNCTION BLOCK TO SUPPLY ELECTRICITY TO THE ABS MODULE IN SUCH A WAY THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT CATCH FIRE, AND THAT POWER WAS NOT BEING SUPPLIED TO TWO OF THE WIRES AT ALL. THE REPAIR SHOP DISCOVERED THERE WERE TWO INCORRECT SPLICES PERFORMED AT THE DEALER. APPARENTLY, THERE WERE TWO SPLICES THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE AND THE MECHANIC ONLY PUT A HEAT-SHRINK TAPE ON THE CONNECTION AND DID NOT ELECTRICALLY CONNECT THE WIRES. AFTER THE REPAIR OF THE TWO SPLICES, THE SHOP FOUND THAT ONE OF THE TWO WIRES SUPPLYING POWER TO THE ABS MODULE STILL ONLY HAD THREE VOLTS AT ONE OF THE CONNECTORS. THE SHOP FOUND ADDITIONAL RECALLS AS WELL. AFTER INSPECTING THE HARNESS PER THE RECALL NOTICE, HE FOUND THE INSULATION ON SOME OF THE WIRES DAMAGED AND ONE OF THE WIRES WAS CORRODED INTERNALLY CAUSING THE LOW VOLTAGE PROBLEM. HE ALSO NOTED THAT THE INSPECTION COVER ON THE CONNECTOR HAD BEEN REMOVED FOR INSPECTION AND THE MASTER CYLINDER CAP LOOKED NEWER AND NOT THE ORIGINAL. ADDITIONALLY, WHEN HE REMOVED THE CONNECTOR FROM THE ABS UNIT, THERE WAS NO GREASE APPLIED IN THE CAVITY LIKE THE RECALL INSTRUCTED.
AS I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, THE ABS AND 4X4 LIGHTS STARTED GOING OFF, WITH THE ABS ENGAGING ERRATICALLY WITH NO APPARENT REASON DUE TO CLIMATE OR TERRAIN. I CALLED FORD DEALER AND THEY SAID EITHER THE AXLE OR THE BRAKE HUB WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED, AT THE EXPENSES OF HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS JUST FOR THE PART, AND LIKELY HUNDREDS MORE FOR LABOR! I THEN GO ONLINE, HOWEVER, A SEE A LITANY OF COMPLAINTS FOR THE FORD ESCAPE HYBRID AND MERCURY MARINER SPANNING OVER THE COURSE OF A DECADE - ALL WITH THE EXACT SAME DESCRIPTION OF WHAT I EXPERIENCED. ALL THE TESTIMONIALS POINTED TOWARDS A THE FAULTY DESIGN OF THE TONE RING THAT IS USED BY THE ABS TO GAGE DRIVING CONDITIONS. APPARENTLY, AFTER A FEW YEARS OF DRIVING, IT TENDS TO SNAP! THIS 5$ - $15 DOLLAR PART IS THEN USED FOR AND AN EXCUSES FOR A REPAIR THAT MAY SPILL OVER INTO THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS, WHILE NOT TO MENTION, ENDANGERING THE DRIVER AND PASSENGERS OF SAID VEHICLES. WHEN I ASKED THE DEALER IF THEY'D REPLACE ONLY THE TONE RING, THEY SAID THEY DO NOT STOCK THE TONE RING ONLY, BUT THEY DO STOCK THE BRAKE HUB AND AXLE. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A DANGEROUS MANUFACTURING FLAW, ONE THAT COULD PUT THE SAFETY OF THE DRIVER AT RISK. THIS VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY 5 AND 1/2 YEARS OLD AND HAS 81,100 MILES ON IT. FOUR (4) TIMES NOW THE ABS TONE RING HAS CRACKED CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO OCCASIONALLY BRAKE AS IF THE ABS IS WORKING AND INCREASING THE STOPPING DISTANCE REQUIRED TO SAFELY STOP THE VEHICLE. THERE ARE MULTIPLE INTERNET REPORTS REGARDING THIS ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE. LAST YEAR (AUG 2011) I HAD TO HAVE ONE OF THE ABS TONE RINGS REPLACED AT APPROX 72,000 MILES. THAT WAS THE 3RD TIME I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM. CONSIDERING THIS IS MY 4TH OCCURRENCE WITH THIS PROBLEM AND THERE ARE NUMEROUS REPORTS ON THE INTERNET I RESPECTFULLY REQUEST THAT AN INVESTIGATION BE OPENED TO LOOK INTO A RECALL OF THIS PART. SOME INTERNET REPORTS SUGGEST THAT FORD HAS MODIFIED THE ABS TONE RING BUT I DO KNOW IF THAT IS CORRECT. I AM A RETIRED AIR FORCE SAFETY SPECIALIST WITH 15 YEARS EXPERIENCE AND IT IS MY BELIEF THAT THIS DEFECT POSES A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD TO BOTH THE DRIVER AND OTHERS SHOULD THE VEHICLE FAIL TO STOP PROPERLY. THE ABS TONE RING ON THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT CRACKED AND BECAME LOOSE MAKING THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH FLASH RED FOR THE 4WD AND ABS SYSTEM. THIS RING IS WHAT THE ABS WHEEL SPEED SENSOR PICKS ITS SIGNAL UP FROM TO ALLOW THE ABS COMPUTER TO DETERMINE IF THE WHEEL IS HAVING A TRACTION ISSUE. THIS IS CAUSING THE ABS AND TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM TO GO CRAZY. I'M BEING TOLD THAT CORROSION FORMS UNDERNEATH THE RING BUILDING TENSION UNTIL IT JUST CRACKS AND POPS ITSELF FREE. FORD HAS QUOTED ME A PRICE OF $300 PER RING REPLACEMENT. MY CAR HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED. IT'S A SHAME THAT THIS PROBLEM IS NOT BEING RECALLED BY FORD WITH A PERMANENT SOLUTION. MY WHOLE FAMILY WAS IN THE VEHICLE LEAVING A PARKING LOT WHEN THE BRAKE LIGHT AND ABS LIGHT BOTH CAME ON AND THE BRAKES FAILED TO WORK AT ALL. I KNEW I NEEDED TO HAVE MY BRAKES AND ROTORS DONE SO I TOOK THEM IN TO GET FIXED AT MEINEKE. AFTER THEY WERE FINISHED THEY TOOK IT FOR THE NORMAL TEST DRIVE TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING WAS WORKING CORRECTLY. THEY NOTICED THAT THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES CAME ON BUT THE LIGHT WASN'T COMING ON. THEY TOLD ME TO TAKE IT TO FORD BECAUSE THEY CANT HANDLE ABS. I TOOK IT TO FORD AND THEY TOLD ME THAT MY FRONT LEFT TONE RING WAS CRACKED. I PAID ALMOST $350 FOR A $10 PIECE TO BE PUT ON. I DROVE IT FOR ABOUT 3 DAYS AND IT STARTED TO HAPPEN AGAIN. I HAVE NOT TAKEN IT BACK BECAUSE I CANT AFFORD TO PAY $100 JUST FOR THEM TO LOOK AT IT TO TELL ME ITS THE SAME THING AGAIN. AT 41,000 MILES, THE SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM LIGHT CAME ON AND REQUIRED AN ABS TONE RING TO BE REPLACED. THIS IS NOW LOOKING TO BE QUITE THE COMMON PART TO BREAK AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRES. THE SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM LIGHT WOULD COME ON IN FREQUENTLY, BUT WOULD NEVER GENERATE A DIAGNOSTIC CODE. AT ~55000 MILES, THE SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM LIGHT TURNED ON AND WHEN I DEPRESSED MY BRAKE PEDAL, IT WENT TO THE FLOOR AND WAS ONLY ABLE TO STOP THE CAR BY DOWNSHIFTING AND USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. LUCKILY I WAS ONLY DRIVING ~25 MPH ON AN EMPTY ROAD, BUT MY YOUNG CHILDREN WERE IN THE CAR. I TURNED THE CAR OFF, AND BACK ON AND TESTED THE BRAKES ON A SHORT FLAT SECTION OF THE ROAD AND THEY WORKED. I PROCEEDED THE 1/4 MILE TO MY HOUSE AND AFTER STOPPING AT A RED LIGHT AND 2 STOP SIGNS, THE BRAKES FAILED PULLING INTO MY DRIVEWAY BEING STOPPED BY MY OTHER CAR!!! THE FORD DEALER HAD THE CAR AND PULLED A DIAGNOSTIC CODE WHICH HAD THEM REPLACE AN ACTUATOR IN THE D-PILLAR. THEY ASSURED ME THAT THIS SOLVED THE ISSUE. MY WIFE LEFT TO TAKE THE KIDS TO SCHOOL AND THE SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM LIGHT TURNED ON AND THE BRAKES FAILED AS SHE PULLED INTO THE DRIVEWAY. WE HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO FORD AND THEY HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND ANYTHING WRONG OR GET THE BRAKES TO FAIL. NO CODES WERE GENERATED. IN SEPTEMBER 2009 I HAD TO HAVE THE ABS TONE RING ON DRIVERS SIDE REPLACED BECAUSE I WAS HAVING ISSUES WHERE BREAKS WOULD "SLIP" WHEN BREAKING- THEY WOULD ENGAGE FOR A BIT THEN SLIP AND RE-ENGAGE. THIS ISSUE DIDN'T PROVE TO BE DANGEROUS FOR ME, BUT COULD HAVE BEEN. THE END OF MAY I BEGAN HAVING THE SAME ISSUES AGAIN AND I KNEW WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS SO I TOOK IT INTO DEALER WHERE THEY REPLACED THE PASSENGER SIDE ABS RING- PROBLEM SEEMED TO BE SOLVED. UNTIL THE NEXT DAY WHEN I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK ON THE HIGHWAY AND LOST MY BREAKS COMPLETELY- LESS THAN 24 HOURS AFTER THEY HAD SERVICED THE BREAKS. HAD CAR TOWED TO DEALER WHERE THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE MASTER CYLINDER WAS BAD AND NEEDED REPLACED- FOR $1400. THIS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT I BELIEVE I CAN WEAR UNUSUALLY SO THAT IT WOULD GO BAD LIKE THIS, AND SO SUDDENLY. IT WAS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION IT PUT ME INTO WHERE I WAS UNABLE TO STOP MY CAR WITHOUT THE USE OF THE EMERGENCY BRAKES. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW THE TOYOTA BREAK ISSUES WERE RECALLED BUT THIS ONE HAS NOT BEEN, IT SEEMS AFTER SEARCHING THE INTERNET THAT THIS IS NOT AN UNCOMMON PROBLEM WITH THE FORD ESCAPE HYBRIDS. WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 95 IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA, MY FAMILY AND I WE'RE CRUISING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS UNTIL TRAFFIC CAME TO A SUDDEN HALT. MY WIFE SUCCESSFULLY APPLIED THE BRAKES IN OUR 2007 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID AND WE CAME TO A STOP. HOWEVER, FOLLOWING THAT STOP, THE BRAKES NO LONGER FUNCTIONED. WE HAD MANAGED TO SUCCESSFULLY NEGOTIATE THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD AND CALLED FOR A TOW TRUCK. THE ONLY FACTOR THAT LED TO THE STOPPING OF THE VEHICLE WAS DOWNSHIFTING AND USE OF THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. THANKFUL WE WERE SAFE, BUT FRUSTRATED BECAUSE WE HAD BEEN AT THE FORD DEALERSHIP THAT MORNING TO HAVE A SERVICE LIGHT AND WEAK BRAKING POWER INVESTIGATED. THE TECHNICIAN TOLD ME THAT THE SERVICE LIGHT COULD BE A COMPUTER MALFUNCTION (TO BE REMEDIED BY A "RE BOOT" OF THE SYSTEM) OR A FAILURE OF THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE. HE ASSURED ME THE VEHICLE WAS SAFE TO DRIVE. IN THE END, BOTH THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE AND HYDRAULIC CONTROL MODULE FAILED, RESULTING IN THE INCIDENT ON I-95. *TR CONSUMER STATED HE GOT RID OF THE VEHICLE AFTER THE BRAKE FAILURE. I STARTED MY CAR IN THE MORNING, AND DROVE UP MY STREET AS I NORMALLY DO ON DRY, CLEAR PAVEMENT, HITTING NO BUMPS OR POTHOLES. AS I GOT TO THE STOP SIGN AND PRESSED MY BRAKE PEDAL, THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND MY 4WD LIGHT BEGAN FLASHING. THE BRAKES MADE A GRINDING SOUND, AND THE BRAKES LOCKED UP. I NOW KNOW THIS AS THE ABS SYSTEM ACTIVATING. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR 2 DAYS NOW, EVERY TIME I HIT THE BRAKES IN MY FORD ESCAPE. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT IT IS A CRACKED TONE RING BY MY LOCAL FORD DEALER AND THAT IT IS A MINIMUM OF $400.00 TO FIX. I DO NOT HAVE THAT KIND OF MONEY. I HAVE BEEN LOOKING ONLINE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND I AM AMAZED AT HOW MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME ISSUE! AND WITH LOW MILEAGE AND THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN. I AM AT 52,000 ON MY 2007 FORD ESCAPE (WITH THIS BEING 90% HIGHWAY MILES) THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND I AM APPALLED THAT THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL ON THIS YET!!!! PLEASE HELP US IN ALLOWING A RECALL FOR ALL THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN EFFECTED BY THIS. LEFT FRONT "TONE RING" FAILED AND LOCKED OUT THE BRAKES. *TR
THE PARKING BRAKE ON OUR 2007 FORD ESCAPE DOES NOT WORK. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO TIFFANY FORD ON FEBRUARY 18, 2009 TO BE ADJUSTED. THE VEHICLE HAS 26,000 MILES ON IT. THE SERVICE MANAGER STATED AFTERWARD THE BRAKES WERE IN GOOD SHAPE AND HE DID NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THE EMERGENCY WAS NOT ADJUSTING. WITHIN 2 WEEKS THE BRAKE HAS BECOME LOOSE AGAIN AND WE WILL BE TAKING IT BACK TO THE DEALER FOR A SECOND TIME. *TR
MY WIFE'S 2007 IS BACK IN THE DEALERSHIP NOW FOR THE FIFTH TIME WITH MAJOR ABS/BRAKE SYSTEM FAILURES IN THE PAST YEAR. THIS WEEKEND WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING, IT STARTED TO SHAKE SO VIOLENTLY SHE HAD TO PULL OFF THE ROAD AND ALMOST HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF HER. SHE IS DEATHLY AFRAID TO DRIVE IT ANY MORE AND WE WOULD JUST LIKE TO GET RID OF IT. HERE IS A BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE BRAKE ISSUES THIS YEAR: 1. AT 17,760 MILES 2/1/08 THE "SERVICE BRAKES" WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. BORGMAN FORD CHECKED SYSTEM AND SAID FUSE #1 WAS BLOWN. NO OTHER FAULTS WERE FOUND. 2. AT 17,771 MILES 2/1/08 MILES "SERVICE BRAKES" LIGHT ON AGAIN. DIAGNOSIS WAS THE ABS MODULE WAS BLOWING FUSES SO THE BRAKE CONTROL ASSY, SOLENOID VALVE BLOCK/HCU WERE REPLACED. VEHICLE OUT OF SERVICE FOR 6 DAYS. 3. AT 23,539 8/4/08 MESSAGE CENTER READS "LOW BRAKE FLUID". DEALER REPLACED THE MASTER CYLINDER AND BLED THE BRAKES. VEHICLE OUT OF SERVICE FOR 5 DAYS. 4. AT 23,713 8/11/08 MY WIFE BROUGHT IN BECAUSE OF THE EXTREMELY LOUD NOISES COMING FROM THE ABS PUMP. DEALER BLED THE BRAKES..STILL NOISY; REPLACED HCU BLED BRAKES AGAIN..OUT OF SERVICE 9 DAYS. 5. AT 26,059 10/19/08 VIOLENT SHAKING WHILE ON FREEWAY ALMOST CAUSED ACCIDENT NARROWLY AVOIDING THE CAR IN FRONT. BACK TO DEALER. DIAGNOSIS WAS "DELAYED BRAKING (EUPHEMISM FOR ALMOST HITTING SOMEONE), ABS & TRACTION CONTROL WARNING LIGHTS ON. DEALER PULLED THE RIGHT FRONT HALFSHAFT AND REPLACED BROKEN TONE RING. FORD CUSTOMER CARE SAID TO CALL THEM WHEN IT FAILS AGAIN BEFORE TAKING IT IN TO THE DEALER. *TR UPDATED 6/8/18*JB
COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE ON 2007 FORD HYBRID. *TR
WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 20-25 MILES PER HOUR BOTH BRAKES LIGHTS CAME ON - THE ABS LIGHT AND THE BRAKE LIGHT. WHEN I TRIED THE BRAKES, I HAD NONE. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD AND STOP THE CAR WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. I SHUT OFF THE CAR AND RE-STARTED IT AND THE BRAKES WORKED. I DROVE IT TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP WHO HAD THE VEHICLE FROM A FRIDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH TUESDAY AFTERNOON. THEY TOLD ME THEY REPLACED THE SOLENOID VALVE BLOCK. WHEN I PICKED UP THE CAR THEY COULD NOT GUARANTEE THIS WOULD NOT HAPPEN AGAIN. FROM RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND THAT OTHER ESCAPE HEVS HAVE ALSO HAD A COMPLETE LOSS OF BRAKES -THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM AND THE FORD CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP CENTER. THEY TOLD ME SOMEONE WOULD GET IN TOUCH WITH ME IN 2-5 DAYS. NO ONE CONTACTED ME AND AFTER 8 DAYS I CALLED THEM BACK. THEY OFFERED ME AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE: I DON'T FEEL THE CAR IS SAFE AND I FEEL THERE IS A STRONG LIKELIHOOD THIS WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. I HAVE NO CONFIDENCE IN EITHER THE VEHICLE OR FORD. *JB
TL* - THE CONTACT CALLED REGARDING A 2006 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID. THE CONTACT WAS TRAVELING AT 60 MPH WHEN THERE WAS A COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE. THE ROAD CONDITIONS WERE DRY. THE ABS LIGHT AND THE BRAKE LIGHT TURNED ON. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE APPLIED GREAT FORCE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE BRAKES WOULD NOT STOP THE VEHICLE. HE ENGAGED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. THE VEHICLE FISHTAILED, AND HE HAD TO DRIVE INTO THE MEDIAN TO AVOID HITTING OTHER VEHICLES. THE VEHICLE EVENTUALLY STOPPED. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE BRAKES HAD FAILED ON FOUR SEPARATE OCCASIONS. EACH TIME, THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE SALES/SERVICE DEALER. THE RIGHT BRAKE SENSOR WAS REPLACED THE FIRST TIME. ON THE 2ND VISIT, THE MASTER COMPUTER SWITCH WAS REPLACED. ON THE 3RD VISIT, ALL SENSORS WERE REPLACED. ALSO, WHILE TRAVELING 22 MPH, THE BRAKES FAILED FOR THE 4TH TIME. ALL SENSORS, MASTER CYLINDER AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEM OF THE BRAKES WERE REPLACED, BUT THE BRAKES STILL FAILED TO WORK PROPERLY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED.*AK
