Your brake pedal went completely to the floor with little resistance while backing out of a parking space, leaving you unable to stop the car. The ABS and brake warning lights came on, and you heard a loud warning noise, but had to coast slowly and use the emergency brake to get home safely. Brake Hydraulic Control Unit failed loss of braking.
Abs and master cylinder causing an unsafe braking condition hard brake pedal making it very difficult to stop the car. I replaced the entire brake system including the master cylinder assembly with pedal travel sensor attached. As recommended by Ford dealership. Then I was told that the brake system system had to be bled 2 times. Well after doing this 3 times and replacing the calipers and pads and rotors again. The same situation exists. Now I am told that this car has a different problem and a bulletin was issued by Ford stating that this is a problem with Ford Escape hybrid has to be reprogrammed to allow the master cylinder assembly to link up with the computer to rectify the issue. My car has 42000 miles on the vehicle and I is very dangerous to drive because of the unreliable braking action. Ford does not acknowledge the problem. But there are many people who have had this same issue. What can I do ? Please help me.
COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE. DRIVEN HOME AT 40 MPH AND THE BRAKE LIGHT AND THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND THERE WAS A BEEP. THERE WERE THEN NO BRAKES AT ALL. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND COAST TO A STOP. TURNED OFF THE TRUCK AND STARTED IT AGAIN AND IT HAD BRAKES. ON THIS LAST INCIDENT, THE SAME THING IN THE SAME ORDER HAPPENED. THIS PROBLEM IS VERY DANGEROUS. IT IS INTERMITTENT THUS MAKING IT HARD TO DIAGNOSE.

WHILE COMING UP TO A STOP SIGN THE BRAKES STOPPED WORKING. LUCKILY THERE WERE NO CARS IN FRONT OF ME AS THE CAR CONTINUED TO ROLL PASS THE STOP SIGN. FLOORING THE BRAKES CAUSED THE CAR TO SLOW DOWN SLOWLY. I ENDED UP PULLING OVER IMMEDIATELY, TURNING OFF THE VEHICLE AND INSPECTING THE VEHICLE. I SAW NO CLEAR INDICATION OF ANYTHING BEING WRONG. WHEN I TURNED BACK ON THE VEHICLE EVERYTHING WAS FINE, UNTIL THE SAME THING HAPPENED THE NEXT DAY. I TOOK THE CAR TO A FEW CAR SHOPS BUT NO ONE COULD FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. THE CAR WAS EVEN TAKEN FOR A TEST DRIVE BY THE MECHANIC BUT PERFORMED WITH NO PROBLEMS. ONE OF THE SHOPS RECOMMENDED I REPLACE THE MASTER CYLINDER OR THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT BUT COULD NOT GUARANTEE THE PROBLEM WOULD NEVER OCCUR AGAIN. I DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE PAYING SO MUCH FOR A NON GUARANTEED JOB SO UNFORTUNATELY I AM STILL DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND THE BRAKES CONTINUES TO STOP WORKING AT RANDOM TIMES.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO BE DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND ISSUED CASE NUMBER: CAS-14733790. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 174,109.

BRAKES FAIL TO MANUAL BRAKES ONLY, VERY SENSITIVE AND WILL LOCK THE WHEELS UP; TOUCHY WITH NO REAL FEED BACK, JUST APPLIED OR OFF WITH SIGNIFICANT PRESSURE REQUIRED. HAPPENED WHEN PULLING INTO A GAS STATION AND NEARLY WENT PAST THE PUMP, BUT SKIDDED TO A STOP INSTEAD. SYSTEM RESETS WITH EACH KEY CYCLE ON/OFF. IT IS SOMEWHAT INTERMITTENT. WHILE WAITING FOR MY FORD APPOINTMENT (CAVALIER FORD IN CHESAPEAKE, VA), I DUPLICATED THE EVENT SEVERAL TIMES UNDER A CONTROLLED, OPEN PARKING LOT TEST AND DRIVE TO THE DEALERSHIP. DEALERSHIP RAN DIAGNOSTICS, AND COULD NOT DUPLICATE. THE RECOMMEND REPLACING BRAKE LINES, THEN MASTER CYLINDER, THEN HCU. REPAIRS IN ORDER ARE $615, $1400, AND OVER $4900. DIAGNOSTICS RAN $130...WITH NO DEFINITIVE ANSWER TO MY PROBLEM.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER AND A MULTI-POINT INSPECTION WAS PERFORMED. THE DEALER DETERMINED THAT THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER AND THE HCU NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER HAD EIGHT TSBS FOR THE SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULICS AND ONE FOR THE SERVICE BRAKES, AIR. THERE WAS NO RECALL CAMPAIGN. THE VEHICLE WAS STILL AT THE DEALER TO BE SERVICED WITH NO SOLUTION OTHER THAN REPLACING THE PARTS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, I HEAR AN ALARM FOR "SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM", AND LOSE ALL POWER TO MY BRAKES. PEDAL IS DEPRESSED TO THE FLOOR WITH MINIMAL ABILITY TO STOP.
WHEN BRAKE PEDAL IS APPLIED WITH CONSTANT PRESSURE, BRAKES WOULD ENGAGE THEN FAIL TO ENGAGE FOR SHORT SECONDS, THEN ENGAGE AGAIN, SYMPTOMS ARE INTERMITTENT. SOME TIMES IT WOULD TRIGGER A BRAKE RELATED DTC. TECHNICIAN DETERMINED IT WAS A FAILED HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT IN THE BRAKE SYSTEM AND WAS TOLD IT WAS COMMON AND OCCURRED ON A NUMBER OF THE SAME MODEL VEHICLES FROM 2005 TO 2012.

BRAKES GO STIFF AT RANDOM TIMES WHILE DRIVING FOR NO PRESENTED REASON AND CAUSE A SHOCK TO DRIVER AND HAVE TO LET GO OF BRAKES THEN PRESS DOWN TO SEE IF THEY WILL WORK. HAPPENS IN MOST IF NOT ALL KIDS OF CONDITIONS, NOT JUST ONE SPECIFIC KIND OF SITUATION. HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 10 TIMES IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS.

BOTH FRONT BRAKE CALIPER FLEXIBLE BRAKE LINES FAILED AT THE SAME TIME. I WAS FORTUNATE THAT I WAS AT LOW SPEED, HOOKING UP MY TRAILER AT THE TIME. NO ACCIDENT OCCURRED. THE BRAKE FLUID DUMPED ON THE INSIDE OF BOTH FRONT TIRES.
IN NORMAL DRIVING, WITH NO WARNING, "BRAKE" AND "ABS" WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATE ALONG WITH "SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM" DISPLAY. CONSIDERABLE EFFORT IS REQUIRED TO SLOW THE VEHICLE AND STOPPING DISTANCE IS 2-3 TIMES NORMAL. I ENDED UP IN A DITCH BECAUSE I COULD NOT STOP IN TIME.

DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY WITH MY FAMILY, A CAR SWERVED INTO OUR LANE CUTTING US OFF. WE HIT THE BRAKES, THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE BRAKES ONLY WORKED WHEN WE SLAMMED ON THEM! TOOK CAR TO CAR COMPUTER SPECIALIST - SAID CAR WAS COULD NOT BE REPROGRAMMED. BILL IS NOW OVER $2,000 AND IT HAS BEEN OVER 2 WEEKS. MECHANIC CALLED FORD (LOTS OF COMPLAINTS ONLINE ABOUT THIS ISSUE). THEY SAID THEY COULD TRY TO REPROGRAM IT, BUT IT COULD TAKE UP TO 10 HOURS AND MAY NOT WORK. FORD SAID THE LAST PROBLEM THEY SAW LIKE THIS DIDN'T WORK AND THE OWNER HAD TO TRADE IN FOR A NEW CAR! NOT ONLY COULD THIS INCIDENT HAVE SERIOUSLY HARMED MY FAMILY, BUT NOW I'M OUT OF A CAR AND $2,000!

NEEDLESS TO SAY A DRIVE HOME AT 10-15MPH STILL FELT LIKE I WAS IN DANGER OF HITTING SOMEONE BECAUSE I COULD NOT JUDGE STOPPING DISTANCE EVEN WITH MY FOOT APPLYING FULL PRESSURE ON THE BRAKES. THE RF FAILED ON 3/15/2012 AT 82553 MILES, THE LF FAILED ON 11/7/2013 AT 98681, THE RR FAILED ON 8/28/2014 AT 111325, THE LR WAS INSPECTED AND REPLACED ON 8/29/2014, SINCE A SEVERE CRACK WAS FOUND. IN ALL 3 CASES, THE HOSE FAILURES LED TO A TOTAL LOSS OF BRAKING. *TR
THE BRAKES FAILED ON THE CAR. AT FIRST IT LOCKED AND THEN THE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. I DIDN'T HIT THEM AGAIN AND COASTED TO A STOP FINALLY PUTTING ON THE PARKING BRAKE. THEN I HAD THE CAR TOWED. THIS HAPPENED AGAIN ABOUT FIVE WEEKS LATER AND THIS TIME IT WAS EXACTLY THE SAME BUT, I HIT THE BRAKES A THIRD TIME AND THE CAR STOPPED. AFTER THE FIRST INCIDENT, THE MECHANIC TRIED TO RECREATE THE PROBLEM AND COULD NOT. THIS SAME THING HAPPENED A FEW YEARS AGO AND WE REPLACED -- AT GREAT EXPENSE -- THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT. SECOND TIME IN 3.8 YEARS ABS AND 4X4 BRAKES BROKE, ABS FLASHING, STEADY ON, 4X4 FLASHING LOOSE BRAKES TONE RING ISSUES, FORD DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THERE ARE ISSUES, TONS OF COMPLAINTS EXCESSIVELY EXPENSIVE TO FIX, UNSAFE, ALSO SUSPENSION BARING JOINTS BRAKE EASY, BRAKES WEAR OUT FAST, I DRIVE UNDER 12K A YEAR. EXHAUST A PIECE OF JUNK, THERE SHOULD BE RECALLS, THEY REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE ISSUE. *TR
WHILE DRIVING, THE BRAKING POWER WAS LOST AND THE ABS AND BRAKE INDICATORS APPEARED. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE COURSE OF THE PAST MONTH. FORTUNATELY I HAVE NOT BEEN ON THE HIGHWAY, BUT THERE HAVE BEEN SOME NEAR MISSES...ACCIDENTS NARROWLY AVERTED. I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY GARAGE INTO MY DRIVEWAY, WHEN I TRIED TO STOP THERE WAS NO BRAKE CONTROL AT ALL. I KEPT ACCELERATING DOWN THE DRIVEWAY STOMPING ON THE BRAKES SEVERAL TIMES UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR BRIEFLY ENOUGH TO THROW THE CAR BACK INTO PARK. WHEN I EXITED THE VEHICLE I NOTICED A PUDDLE ON MY GARAGE FLOOR AS WELL AS ALL OVER MY DRIVER SIDE FRONT TIRE. I CHECKED THE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL AND IT WAS COMPLETELY EMPTY. I HAD IT TOWED TO A SERVICE GARAGE AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE AS BEING A CORRODED AND RUPTURED DRIVERS SIDE BRAKE LINE AND A PASSENGER SIDE BRAKE LINE THAT WAS CRACKED IN SEVERAL PLACES. I HAVE SINCE SEEN A FEW DOZEN COMPLAINTS ON THIS SITE REGARDING THE SAME ISSUE WITH MY VINTAGE FORD ESCAPE. I CANNOT BELIEVE THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE. BOTH THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER AND THE SERVICE GARAGE SAID THEY HAVE HAD NUMEROUS FORDS WITH THE SAME ISSUE. I'M VERY DISAPPOINTED IN FORD FOR NOT ISSUING A RECALL ON SOMETHING AS DANGEROUS AS BRAKE FUNCTIONING. WHILE COMING UP TO A STOP SIGN I STARTED TO PRESS MY BRAKE AND WHILE COMING TO A STOP THE BRAKES STOPPED WORKING ALLOWING MY VEHICLE TO LUNGE FORWARD A FEW FEET WITHOUT ANY BRAKES BEFORE THE BRAKES KICKED BACK IN BRINGING MY CAR TO A STOP. ALARM SOUNDED WHEN TRAVELING ON HIGHWAY, BRAKELIGHT ILLUMINATED AND NO BRAKE. GRANDMOTHER DRIVING GRANDDAUGHTER BARELY MISSED COLLISION WITH STOPPING TRAFFIC. TWO MECHANICS LATER REVEAL COSTLY CONTROL UNIT IS TO BLAME. EASY INTERNET RESEARCH SHOWS MANY OTHERS WITH SAME EXPERIENCE. ABS LIGHT CAME ON. 4WD LIGHT STARTED BLINKING. THERE WAS A GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM THE WHEEL/BRAKE AREA OF THE VEHICLE. THE ABS LIGHT REMAINED ON BUT THE 4WD FLASHED AND THEN TURNED OFF. ABS LIGHT SUDDENLY CAME ON AND I HAD TO PRESS THE BRAKES ALMOST ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR TO STOP THE CAR. I PULLED OVER AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. WHEN I STARTED THE CAR BACK UP, THERE WAS NO ABS LIGHT OR SERVICE ENGINE INDICATOR. MECHANIC SAID THAT I NEED TO REPLACE THE MASTER CYLINDER AND POSSIBLY THE HCU. I PRESSED ON THE BRAKE PEDDLE. IT WAS VERY LOOSE AND DEPRESSED EASILY ABOUT 1 INCH, THEN STOPPED ABRUPTLY AND HELD FIRM WITHOUT SLOWING THE CAR AT ALL. AFTER PRESSING DOWN HARDER WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO BUDGE THE BRAKES, I LIFTED AND REAPPLIED THE BRAKES. THIS TIME THEY WORKED. THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN A COUPE DAYS LATER. I TOOK IT IN TO THE FORD DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME THE ABS MODULE AND MASTER CYLINDER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. FROM MY RESEARCH, FAULTY MASTER CYLINDER AND ABS MODULE ARE COMMON FOR THIS VEHICLE. *TR

I TOOK IT IN BUT SINCE IT WAS RANDOM, THEY COULDN'T REPRODUCE IT OR FIND ANYTHING WRONG. LAST WEEK, THE LIGHTS CAME ON AND WOULDN'T GO OFF AT ALL. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT AT THE DEALERSHIP AND TOOK IT IN A FEW DAYS LATER. THE LIGHTS DIDN'T COME ON. THE DEALERSHIP CALLED TO SAY I NEEDED A NEW HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT (HCU). THE PRICE WAS $4500. THIS WAS ON TOP OF THE TWO DIAGNOSTIC FEES OF $125 EACH I HAD ALREADY PAID. ALTOGETHER I HAD TO PAY $4750 AND MY FEH HAS 150,700 MILES ON IT. *TR

I WAS DRIVING ON A ROAD WHERE THE SPEED LIMIT WAS ABOUT 45 MPH AND I WAS GOING ABOUT 30 MPH WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN A RED LIGHT CAME ON WITH THE ABS WARNING MESSAGE ON IT AND THE CAR TURNED OFF. THE NEXT DAY I TOOK THE CAR TO THE SHOP TO GET THE BRAKES CHECKED OUT AND THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES. THANKFULLY, THE PROBLEM HAS NOT HAPPENED AGAIN. I AM VERY FORTUNATE THAT A CAR WAS NOT IN FRONT OF ME BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE SURELY HIT IT. *TR

I INSPECTED THE OTHER 3 BRAKE LINES AND THEY WERE ON THE VERGE OF RUPTURING. I REPLACED ALL 4 LINES. I REALIZE THE PARTS ARE NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY ANYMORE, BUT REPLACING BRAKE LINES AFTER 7 YEARS IS MUCH SOONER THAN I WOULD EXPECT. BRAKE LINES SHOULD NOT BE A NORMAL SERVICE ITEM LIKE SPARK PLUGS. I LIKE MY 2005 FORD ESCAPE. I DON'T WANT TO COMPLAIN ABOUT IT, BUT I NEED TO REPORT THIS DANGEROUS INCIDENT. IT APPEARS TO ME THERE IS A QUALITY DEFECT WITH THE BRAKE LINES. I RETURNED HOME FROM A LOCAL TRIP. PARKED MY FORD ESCAPE IN THE GARAGE. WHEN MY SON ATTEMPTED TO LEAVE WITH THE CAR ABOUT 15 MINUTES LATER, THERE WAS LITTLE BRAKING POWER. HE RETURNED THE CAR TO THE GARAGE AND WE NOTICED A LEAK AROUND THE RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER TIRE. WHEN I INSPECTED THE LEAK UNDERNEATH THE CAR, AND HAD MY WIFE PUMP THE BRAKES, I SAW THE LEAK WAS COMING FROM THE BRAKE LINE CONNECTION OF RUBBER TO METAL UNDER THE WHEEL WELL. IN AUG 2012 WE WERE ON OUR WAY BACK FROM A VACATION AND OUR ABS LIGHT CAME ON, ALONG WITH A FLASHING 4X4 LIGHT. WE HAD NO IDEA WHAT IT WAS OR WHAT TO DO. THE VEHICLE DROVE FINE AND STOPPED FINE, EXCEPT FOR A COUPLE OF TIMES IT FELT AS IF THE ABS ENGAGED ON DRY CEMENT. WE STOPPED TO EAT AND SHOP FOR A FEW HOURS AND THE LIGHTS WERE OFF WHEN WE GOT BACK IN THE VEHICLE. THEY DIDN'T COME ON AGAIN UNTIL A FEW DAYS AGO (JAN 2013). HOWEVER, I HAD BEEN COMPLAINING TO MY HUSBAND RECENTLY THAT THE BRAKES DIDN'T SEEM TO WORK RIGHT. I HIT ICE AND THE ABS DIDN'T ENGAGE ..NO LIGHT EITHER..BUT THE GRINDING SOUND ONCE IN AWHILE WAS STILL THERE. SO WE TOOK IT IN AND PUT IT ON THE COMPUTER TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. CAME BACK WITH 2 CODES U2023 AND C1234. WHICH MEANS THE RIGHT FRONT TONE RING IS BAD. AFTER SEARCHING THE INTERNET, I FOUND THIS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM. ALSO GOT UNDER THE TRUCK AND SURE ENOUGH THE TONE RING IS CRACKED AND SPINNING AROUND LOOSELY. THE SAFETY ISSUE HERE IS THE ABS WILL LOCK UP RANDOMLY ON DRY CEMENT WHEN YOU START TO APPLY YOUR BRAKES. WHICH THEN YOU CAN'T COMPLETELY CONTROL YOUR VEHICLES DIRECTION AND IF YOU TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF THE BREAK TO CONTROL YOUR VEHICLE, THEN YOU MAY HIT SOMEONE OR SOMETHING. AFTER ADDITIONAL EFFORT, I WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO SLOW DOWN AND STOP, BUT I WAS ALREADY AT A REDUCED SPEED SINCE I WAS COMING TO A STOP. I THOUGHT MY CAR MAT HAD JAMMED MY BRAKES, SO I THOUGHT NOTHING OF IT UNTIL IT HAPPENED AGAIN. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE FORD DEALER WHERE I MADE THE PURCHASE. THEY KEPT MY VEHICLE FOR A WEEK TO "REPRODUCE" THE PROBLEM, WHICH THEY DID. I WAS THEN TOLD THAT THE PARTS ALONE WOULD COST $3,000, BUT THAT THE ENGINEERS AT FORD CORPORATE SUGGESTED THAT THE MECHANICS PERFORM AN ELECTRO-MECHANICAL BRAKE BLEED, WHICH SEEMED TO FIX THE PROBLEM, BUT IT DID NOT. THREE WEEKS LATER, THE BRAKES FAILED AGAIN. THIS TIME THE DEALERSHIP KEPT MY VEHICLE FOR TWO WEEKS, BUT WERE UNABLE TO REPRODUCE THE FAILURE. I WAS TOLD THAT THE ONLY WAY TO FIX THE PROBLEM WAS TO COMPLETELY REPLACE THE BRAKING SYSTEM. I ACTUALLY CALLED FORD HQ ABOUT THIS ISSUE. THE PERSON WITH WHOM I SPOKE OFFERED NO REAL RESOLUTION, AND SHE SEEMED UNAWARE OF THINGS. FORD IS VERY AWARE OF THE PROBLEMS WITH THE HYBRID BRAKING SYSTEM. EVEN IF I SPENT $7,000 ON A NEW SYSTEM, IT'S GOING TO FAIL AGAIN BECAUSE IT HAS THE SAME DESIGN FLAW OF THE CURRENT BRAKING SYSTEM. I BOUGHT THIS 2005 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID FROM DRIVER'S WORLD IN VIRGINIA BEACH, VA, AND FOUND SERIOUS PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES THE MINUTE I DROVE OFF THE LOT. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE FIRST STOP SIGN LEAVING THE USED CAR DEALERSHIP, I GENTLY PRESSED THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN AND FELT AS THOUGH THE ABS WAS LOCKING UP PREVENTING ME FROM EVEN SLOWING DOWN. WHEN I LET OFF OF THE BRAKES AND PRESSED THEM AGAIN, I WAS ABLE TO BRAKE JUST FINE. I FIGURED IT MAY HAVE BEEN A FLUKE, SO I CONTINUED DRIVING FOR 2 HOURS FROM VIRGINIA BEACH TO MIDLOTHIAN. I STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT IN MIDLOTHIAN WHEN THE BRAKE LIGHT AND THE ABS LIGHT BOTH CAME ON AT THE SAME TIME, AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ROLL. I PRESSED THE BRAKES AS HARD AS I COULD AND THE VEHICLE STOPPED ROLLING. I CONTINUED TO DRIVE FOR 2 MILES IN THIS CONDITION OF HAVING TO PRESS THE BRAKES EXTREMELY HARD TO GET THE VEHICLE TO SLOW DOWN. WHEN I ARRIVED AT MY DESTINATION, I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON, AND THE PROBLEM HAD GONE AWAY. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO DRIVER'S WORLD 36 HOURS LATER. DRIVER'S WORLD KEPT THE VEHICLE FOR TWO AND A HALF WEEKS AND CLAIMED THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. THEREFORE, EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE IS UNDER THEIR 30DAY/1000MILE WARRANTY THEY WILL NOT MAKE ANY REPAIRS OR GIVE A REFUND. I PICKED THE VEHICLE UP FROM DRIVER'S WORLD, AND AT THE FIRST STOP LIGHT I CAME TO THE BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON. I TOOK IT BACK TO DRIVER'S WORLD, AND THEY WERE ABLE TO FIND ERROR CODES C1471 AND C1472, BUT THEY DID NOT KNOW WHAT THEY MEANT SO THEY TOLD ME TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO FORD'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT. ON THE WAY TO FORD'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT THERE WAS ONE OCCASION WHEN I PRESSED THE BRAKES AND FELT AGAIN THAT THE ABS WAS LOCKING UP PREVENTING ME FROM EVEN SLOWING DOWN. I LET OFF OF THE BRAKE AND PRESSED IT AGAIN, AND I STOPPED JUST FINE. AT THIS TIME FORD STILL HAS THE VEHICLE AND IS ATTEMPTING TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. *TR
BRAKES BECAME VERY "SOFT" AND BRAKE LIGHT, ABS LIGHT AND "SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM" LIGHT APPEARED. PARKED CAR FOR 5 HOURS, AND WHEN I RESTARTED, THE BRAKES SEEMED FINE AND THE LIGHTS WERE OFF. TOWED CAR TO SHOP AND HAD BRAKES REPLACED (@ 5%, SO THOUGHT THIS WAS THE "ONLY" PROBLEM). 2 WEEKS LATER, I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. REPAIR SHOP DID MORE DIAGNOSTICS AND RESEARCH, AND DISCOVERED THE MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER / HCU ISSUE THAT IS FREQUENTLY REPORTED ON-LINE. *TR
MY BRAKES HAVE A VERY HARD PEDAL FROM TIME TO TIME. REQUIRING ME TO PUMP THE BRAKES TO STOP. MY FORD DEALER TELLS ME IT IS THE MASTER CYLINDER AND IT WILL COST $3000.00 TO REPAIR. THEY ALSO STATE THAT THEY ARE NOT SURE THIS WILL FIX THE PROBLEM. (REMEMBER THIS IS A HYBRID AND BRAKES ARE DIFFERENT) SECOND ISSUE IS THE ELECTRIC DRIVE TRAIN DOES NOT ALLOW THE ENGINE TO SHUT DOWN UNDER 30 MPH LIKE IT IS SUPPOSED TO DUE UNDER 30 MPH. AT TIMES THIS REQUIRES EXTRA BREAKING BECAUSE THE ENGINE DOES NOT IDLE DOWN LIKE IT SHOULD. FORD SEEMS TO BE AWARE OF THESE PROBLEMS. I FOUND SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ON THE WEB DESCRIBING THE SAME PROBLEMS. IT SEEMS FORD HAS DONE VERY LITTLE TO ASSIST THE CUSTOMERS, OR TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. *TR
HAD LIGHT WARNING OF BRAKE FAILURE. INVESTIGATION DISCOVERED BROKEN RING WITH TEETH ON FRONT AXLE THAT SENSES WHEEL ROTATION. PART IS CALLED "TONE RING" FORD PART #7L8Z-2C182-B. THIS CAUSES A FAILURE OF THE ABS AND TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM. INTERNET SEARCH SHOWED THIS AS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH ALL YEAR FORD ESCAPES AND IS A VERY BAD DESIGN. THIS $32 PART CAUSES A $300 PARTS AND LABOR COST SINCE RECOMMENDED FIX IS TO REPLACE A PERFECTLY GOOD AXLE. IT APPEARS TO BE CAUSED BY EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION OF THE RING AND RUST BETWEEN THE AXLE AND THE PRESSED ON RING. *TR
AS I DROVE MY FORD ESCAPE 2005 DOWN A HILL THE BRAKE LINE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE RUPTURED, CAUSING THE BRAKE FLUID TO LEAK WHICH QUICKLY RESULTED IN NO BRAKING ABILITY. I MANAGED TO STOP MY CAR BY DOWN SHIFTING INTO FIRST GEAR AND USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. I WAS NOT ABLE TO CONTROL THE CAR BEFORE GOING THROUGH A STOP SIGN, FORTUNATELY, NO CARS OR PEDESTRIANS WERE IN THE WAY. ABOUT A WEEK LATER, I NOTICED THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS HARD WHEN INITIALLY PRESSED AND SOFTENED WHEN THE CAR WAS TURNED ON. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD ABOUT 35 MPH WHEN THE SERVICE BREAKS AND ABS WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE BRAKES ONLY WORKED IF I PRESSED REALLY HARD TO THE FLOOR AND THEN IT WAS JERKY. I DROVE A SHORT DISTANCE TO RETURN FROM WHERE I STARTED AND TURNED OFF THE CAR. WHEN I TURNED IT ON AGAIN A FEW MINUTES LATER, THE WARNING LIGHTS WERE OFF AND I HAD BRAKING POWER AGAIN. I DROVE A FEW MILES TO THE DEALER AND WHEN I PULLED INTO THE PARKING LOT TO PARK, THE BRAKES FAILED AGAIN AND WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. THIS WAS A SUNDAY. THEY LOOKED AT THE VEHICLE ON MONDAY AND NOTICED THE HARD BRAKE PEDAL, BUT HE LIGHTS WERE NOT ON. THEY LOOKED AT THE COMPUTER SERVICE CODES AND INFORMED ME I NEEDED TO REPLACE THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT/ABS MODULE AND POSSIBLE THE MASTER CYLINDER AT A PRICE TAG OF $4300 - $5500+. THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE INTERMITTENT, BUT THE VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. THE FRONT BRAKE HOSE THAT CONNECTS THE BRAKE LINE TO THE BRAKE CALLIPER ON THE PASSENGER SIDE BEARST A HOLE IN THE BRAKE HOSE CAUSING THE SUV TO LOOSE ALL BRAKE FLUID AND TO SMASH INTO TO VAN INFRONT OF US. I REPLACED FRONT BRAKE LINE AND WAS BLEEDING THE BRAKE LINES WHEN I FOUND THE DRIVERS SIDE LOOKED LIKE IT WAS READY TO BEARST AT ANY TIME INCLUDING SEVERAL ROTTED SPOTS AT THE UPPER PART OF THE HOSE. I REPLACED BOTH FRONT BRAKE LINES IN THE FRONT. TWO DAYS AFTER BUYING THE BRAKE LINES, I RETURNED TO THE AUTO PARTS STORE TO PURCHASE PARTS FOR ANOTHER TRUCK WHEN THE SALESPERSON TOLD ME THE NEXT DAY AFTER I BOUGHT THE BRAKE LINES THAT ANOTHER PERSON HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH HIS ESCAPE. THE SALESMAN WAS NOT SURE OF THE YEAR THAT FORD ESCAPE WAS. I SAVED THE BRAKE LINES FOR FURTHER INSPECTION/INVESTIGATION AS TO THE REASON THEY FAILED. I FEEL BRAKE BRAKE HOSE FAILURE IN A 05 SUV IS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZZARD AND SHOULD BE RECALLED BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED. *TR

I WAS ABLE TO START THE VEHICLE AFTER DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY AND EVERYTHING OPERATED NORMALLY. AFTER GETTING HOME AND RUNNING DIAGNOSTICS EVERYTHING CAME BACK NORMAL. LATER THAT DAY THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START AGAIN WITH THE SAME WARNINGS AND IT WAS MORE AND MORE DIFFICULT TO GET THE VEHICLE WORKING AGAIN. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE 12V BATTERY SEEMED TO BE LEAKING SO I INSPECTED AND CLEANED IT. THE NEXT DAY (MONDAY) I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO THE FORD DEALER AND EXPLAINED THE PROBLEMS INCLUDING THE LEAKING BATTERY. THE DEALER REPLACED THE 12 V BATTERY UNDER WARRANTY AND SAID MY PROBLEMS SHOULD BE FIXED BUT THEY WOULD CHECK FOR FAULT CODES. THE DEALER FOUND ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS WITH THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM BUT COULD NOT IMMEDIATELY DIAGNOSE THE CAUSE. THE CAR WAS LEFT FOR ANOTHER DAY AND EVENTUALLY I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS MOST LIKELY THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT (HCU) WITH WAS APPROXIMATELY A $4500 PART. I HAVE READ STORIES ONLINE THAT THIS IS A FAIRLY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL YEAR ESCAPE HYBRID AND FORD IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE BUT NOT DOING ANYTHING TO CORRECT IT OTHER THAN MAKING THE OWNERS BUY $4500 REPLACEMENT PARTS. *TT

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST WHICH CONCLUDED THAT THE HCU ASSEMBLY WAS FAULTY AND PERFORMED THE NECESSARY REPAIRS. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 100,000.
WHILE PULLING INTO MY DRIVEWAY, MY BREAKS SUDDENLY FAILED, WHICH CAUSED ME TO (THANKFULLY NO MORE THAN) RUN INTO THE TREE AT THE END OF MY DRIVEWAY. UPON INSPECTION, I REALIZED THAT MY PASSENGER SIDE BRAKE LINE THAT CONNECTS TO THE WHEEL CYLINDER HAD FAILED DUE TO DETERIORATION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE MASTER CYLINDER AND THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 60,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 60,500.
THE ISSUE I AM HAVING IS THE SAME AS DESCRIBED IN COMPLAINT #10318942. INTERMITTENTLY ON DRY PAVEMENT DURING NORMAL BRAKING, THE ABS WILL ENGAGE (WITH INDICATOR LIGHT FLASHING ON) AND YOU CAN FEEL THE TYPICAL ABS ON/OFF PULSING OF THE BRAKES IN THE BRAKE PEDAL. IT APPEARS THE CAR IS ALSO TAKING LONGER TO COME TO A FULL STOP WHEN THIS OCCURS. I HAVE REPORTED IT MULTIPLE TIMES AT THE FORD DEALERSHIP, BUT THEY ARE UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE. 2005 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID - THE CAR WOULD BEGIN TO SKID AND SLIDE WHEN APPROACHING A STOP REGARDLESS OF THE VEHICLE SPEED OR ROAD CONDITIONS. THE ABS WOULD KICK IN AND THE INDICATOR WOULD COME ON TELLING THE DRIVER THAT THE CAR WAS SLIDING. THIS IS A DANGEROUS CONDITION AS THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP WHEN THE BRAKES ARE PRESSED. AFTER INVESTIGATING ONLINE, I DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THIS MAKE AND MODEL OF HYBRID VEHICLE. MANY OTHER DRIVERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING. WE HAVE EXPERIENCED AN UNUSUAL PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM IN OUT 2005 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID. I AM CERTAIN THAT THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM MAINLY BECAUSE I HAVE READ ALL OF THE POSTINGS FOR THIS CAR AND FOUND THAT MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING PROBLEMS IN THIS AREA. THE "SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM MESSAGE" APPEARED AND THE DASH "BRAKE" INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON OVER A THREE WEEK PERIOD FOLLOWED BY THE 4X4 SYSTEM AND ABS SYSTEM MAKING NOISE, JERKING THE CAR SEVERAL TIMES AND THEN SHUTTING DOWN WHILE I WAS DRIVING (NOVEMBER 2007). I ASKED WHY THIS HAD HAPPENED AGAIN, AND WHAT I WAS TOLD HORRIFIED ME. THE MANUFACTURER MOST LIKELY HAD NOT RESOLVED THE PROBLEM OF THE PAST AND THAT THE PROBLEM WAS IN THE PARTS. COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE. FIRST TIME IT OCCURRED WAS ON THE INTERSTATE - 65 MILES AN HOUR AND THE BRAKE LIGHT AND THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND THERE WAS A BEEP. THERE WERE THEN NO BRAKES AT ALL. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND COAST TO A STOP. TURNED OFF THE TRUCK AND STARTED IT AGAIN AND IT HAD BRAKES. ON THIS LAST INCIDENT, THE SAME THING IN THE SAME ORDER HAPPENED. THANKFULLY, MY WIFE WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO COAST TO A STOP WITHOUT HITTING ANYONE OR ANYTHING. THIS PROBLEM IS VERY DANGEROUS. PURCHASED 05 ESCAPE AT 40,096 MILES IN JULY '06. ABOUT 2 WEEKS LATER, ROTORS WERE WARPED SO DEALER REPLACED THEM FOR FREE. ABOUT 10,000 MILES LATER THEY WERE WARPED AGAIN AND THEY "TURNED" THE ROTORS. ABOUT 4,000 MILES LATER THEY WERE WARPED AGAIN SO THE DEALER REPLACED THEM AGAIN. NOW LESS THAN 5,000 MILES LATER, THEY ARE WARPED AGAIN. DEALER LOOKED AT THE CAR AND REFUSED ANY REPAIRS, ONLY NOTING THAT THERE IS *NOTHING* WRONG WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM, ONLY THE ROTORS ARE WARPED, WITH NO KNOWN REASON EXCEPT IT MUST BE "THE WAY I AM DRIVING". JUST TODAY NOW THE ABS LIGHT IS STEADY ON, WITH NO REASON THAT I CAN NOTICE FROM MY OWN DRIVING. MY OWN RESEARCH TELLS ME THAT IT MAY BE A "TONE RING" ON THE AXLE, WHICH REQUIRES A REPAIR FOR OVER $1,000 FOR EACH AXLE, AS THE ENTIRE AXLE MUST BE REPLACED TO REPAIR THE "TONE RING". *JB
FRONT BRAKE ROTORS GO OUT OF ROUND. ONE DEALER RESURFACED, WARR, NOT THERE LONG AFTER OUT OF ROUND AGAIN. REPLACED WITH NEW, AGAIN OUT OF ROUND . ANOTHER DEALER REPLACED ROTORS TWICE. AGAIN OUT OF ROUND. VEHICLE PULSATES WHILE STOPPING. *NM
HAVE READ ON YOUR SITE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS WITH THE FORD 2005 ESCAPE ENGINE AND THE PROBLEM THAT IT SPEEDS UP DURING BRAKING. I HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM. HOWEVER THE PROBLEM IS THE DRIVER !! IF YOU ARE LARGE PERSON OR HAVE LARGE FEET. DURING BRAKING THE BRAKE PEDAL GOES LOWER THAN THE GAS PEDAL AND YOUR SHOE TOE CATCHES THE GAS PEDAL AND ACCELERATES THE ENGINE, THIS HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES. THE GAS PEDAL HAS VERY LITTLE RESISTANCE AND YOU ARE NOT AWARE THAT YOUR SHOE IS PUSHING IT DOWN. IT APPEARS ALSO THAT THE PEDALS ARE CLOSER TOGETHER THAN NORMAL. 9-1-04 MY 2005 FORD ESCAPE WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE OF MY HOME WHERE I BEGAN TO BACK UP. THERE WAS AN OBSTRUCTION IN MY DRIVEWAY SO I PUT THE CAR INTO DRIVE AND PULLED 1/2 WAY INTO THE GARAGE TO CLEAR THE WAY. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK, OPENED MY DOOR, TOOK OFF MY SEATBELT AND GOT OUT OF MY CAR WALKING TOWARDS THE REAR. SUDDENLY THE CAR ACCELERATED IN REVERSE KNOCKING ME DOWN BECAUSE OF THE OPEN DOOR. I JUMPED INTO THE CAR (WHERE MY CHILDREN WERE IN THE BACK SEAT) TO PLACE THE CAR IN PARK-IT WAS IN PARK AND ROLLING FAST. I USED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP THE VEHICLE WITH THE HELP OF THE OPEN DOOR JAMMING ALONG SIDE THE GARAGE WALL. THE END RESULT WAS SHOULDER AND COLLAR BONE DAMAGE AS WELL AS SEVER BODY DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE OPEN DOOR. IF THE DOOR HAD NOT BEEN OPEN, MY CHILDREN WOULD HAVE ROLLED INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND BEEN HIT HEAD ON. I AM POSITIVE SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THIS NEW CAR, YET THE GALPIN VAN NUYS FORD DEALERSHIP HAS REFUSED TO INSPECT IT FOR SAFETY. THEY INSISTED THAT I FIRST FILE A CLAIM WITH MY INSURANCE CARRIER, WHICH I DID AND STILL HAVE BEEN REFUSED THE SAFETY INSPECTION BY FORD AND THE DEALERSHIP LEVEL AND THE CORPORATE LEVEL. BRAKES ARE MAKING NOISE INTERMITTINGLY. IT SOUNDS LIKE BLOWING IN A BOTTLE. WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE 3 TIMES IN THE FIRST MONTH OF OWNERSHIP. THEY KEEP GRINDING DOWN THE ROTORS AND IT'S NOT HELPING. APPARANTLY FORD CORP. IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND ARE TRYING TO FIND A CURE. THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO AT THIS POINT. ALSO, STEALTH SECURITY SYSTEM FAILED, AND THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR. THIS ALSO HAPPENED IN FIRST MONTH OF OWNERSHIP.
