Your Volt's Battery Energy Control Module (the computer that manages the high-voltage battery) has failed, preventing the car from charging and triggering a "reduced power" warning message. While General Motors has acknowledged this issue with a special coverage bulletin, your vehicle may not qualify for the repair program depending on which state you registered it in. If this module continues to fail, your car could become completely unable to operate.

On 10/14, I was driving the car to my job, when the car suddenly switched from its electric battery power to its internal combustion engine. The vehicle's information screen only showed that the battery was unavailable. I was able to operate the car on only the internal combustion engine to arrive at work.

Your 2017 Chevrolet Volt failed to start while parked, and the check engine light along with several other warning lights came on. After restarting the vehicle, you took it to the dealer where they diagnosed a Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) failure. The manufacturer said you'd have to pay for the repair yourself. This happened at around 84,000 miles.

Following a day trip involving sub-freezing temperatures and full depletion of the traction battery, the vehicle was plugged in at home and appeared to be charging. The following morning, I enable the preheat via the remote before leaving the house for work, and notice the CEL/MIL before starting the car. Car was cold, charging indicator was flashing green as if it was accepting charge.

Coolant was discovered inside your Chevrolet Volt's lithium-ion battery module during a dealership service visit, and the battery was deemed unusable even though there was no visible damage to the module itself. The dealership estimated the repair cost at $29,000, and a service representative acknowledged seeing this issue on multiple vehicles, suggesting it may be a manufacturing defect rather than a maintenance-related problem. Despite regular maintenance and recalls at Chevrolet dealerships throughout the vehicle's 127,000-mile life, the coolant contamination still occurred. The repair will likely involve replacing the entire battery module to prevent potential safety issues.
