NHTSA Campaign: 04V302000

Component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 114, 'THEFT PROTECTION.' AN IGNITION KEY PARK LOCK CABLE END FITTING WAS NOT FULLY SEATED ON THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHIFTER NAIL HEAD DURING INSTALLATION.

Risk: THIS CAN PREVENT THE CABLE AUTO-SET FROM CORRECTLY ADJUSTING THE CABLE. AN INCORRECTLY ADJUSTED CABLE PREVENTS THE SHIFTER FROM LOCKING IN THE 'PARK' POSITION WHEN THE KEY IS REMOVED FROM THE KEY CYLINDER.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT FOR A PROPERLY FUNCTIONING SHIFT LOCK WHEN THE IGNITION KEY IS REMOVED. DEALERS WILL REPAIR VEHICLES THAT EXHIBIT THE SUBJECT CONDITION. THE RECALL BEGAN AUGUST 17, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438.

Your ignition switch isn't working properly — when you turn it to the off position and remove the key, the engine may keep running and won't shut off. Additionally, you can shift your car out of park and into any gear without pressing the brake pedal, even after removing the key, which is a serious safety issue. These problems may also be causing your battery to drain quickly and making it difficult to remove the key from the ignition. The fix will likely require replacing the faulty ignition switch and possibly the shifter interlock mechanism to restore proper safety function.

After your battery was replaced at the dealership, your CD changer stopped working and won't eject discs—it just makes a clicking sound instead. The CD changer appears to have been damaged or disconnected during the battery replacement service. The repair may involve reconnecting the CD changer, checking its electrical connections, or replacing the unit entirely.

Your 2005 Chevrolet Equinox enters limp mode (reduced power) after it rains, and your check engine light stays on. This has been happening for 6-8 months, and you've noticed water flooding the floorboards. The dealer has been unable to diagnose the problem. The issue likely involves water damage to engine sensors or electrical connections that need to be inspected and dried out or replaced.

Your rear brakes are making clinking and grinding noises, and the brake pedal pulses when you stop. You're experiencing excessive fuel consumption and difficulty stopping, even though you recently replaced all brake pads. The ABS and traction control warning lights stay on constantly. An ABS sensor was already replaced, but the problem continues and you smell burning brakes. Fixing this likely involves diagnosing the ABS system further, possibly replacing additional sensors, checking brake rotors, or addressing issues with the brake proportioning valve.

Your ABS and traction control warning lights have turned on, and your vehicle is having trouble stopping. When you brake, the ABS system kicks in but takes longer than normal to stop the car, and this has happened twice in intersections. This is a serious safety concern that needs immediate attention.

Filed: May 2022

The front subframe where it connects to your vehicle's main frame has severely rusted and loosened on the right side, with the left side nearly failing as well. This subframe supports your engine and suspension control arms, and your mechanic indicated this is a recurring issue with Chevy Equinoxes that typically results in the vehicle being scrapped since there's no standard repair available. A proper fix would likely require complete subframe replacement or welding repair by a skilled fabricator.

Power Train,unknown Or Other1 issue
criticalPOWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Jun 2021

Your car's ignition switch allows the keys to be removed while the engine is running and the vehicle is not in Park, which could allow the car to move unexpectedly without control. The keys sometimes also fail to start the vehicle. You've noticed this problem can be reproduced consistently, and you've confirmed the same issue occurs on another 2005 Equinox. The ignition switch may need to be replaced to prevent accidental key removal while driving.

Your transmission failed to shift properly while driving at low speeds, leaving your car stuck at 20 mph. You experienced a dangerous electrical surge through the steering wheel that caused injury requiring medical attention. Additionally, your engine continued running even after turning off the ignition switch — the battery had to be disconnected to shut it down. Your dealer determined the transmission needs replacement and the electrical system needs reprogramming.

CrashFiled: May 2021

Your car has multiple serious issues: the brakes won't release after you press the pedal, the key falls out of the ignition while driving, the steering feels unstable when turning, the gas door is hard to open, and the engine is detecting a large leak in the emissions system (error code P0445). These problems require immediate professional inspection, particularly the brake and steering issues which affect your ability to control the vehicle safely.

The metal mounting points where your front subframe (engine and transmission support) connects to the main body have rusted away on both the left and right sides. Because these connection points are no longer secure, you hear a clunking noise while driving. This will need welding or replacement of the corroded mounting brackets to reattach the subframe properly.

Filed: Jul 2022

Your ignition switch has failed multiple times, preventing the key from turning and the engine from starting. Even after being replaced twice under a recall (NHTSA Campaign 04V302000), the problem came back, leaving your daughter unable to start the vehicle without roadside assistance. The issue occurred around 115,000 miles and the manufacturer hasn't offered further help. The fix will likely involve replacing the ignition switch again or investigating why the replacement parts are failing prematurely.

Power Train,unknown Or Other,engine1 issue
highPOWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
Filed: Jan 2022

Your engine and powertrain warning lights came on at a car wash and won't turn off. When you accelerate, the engine hesitates and doesn't respond immediately — it takes several seconds to move even from a stop sign, which creates a safety risk when turning or merging into traffic. A mechanic should scan your vehicle's computer for error codes and check your fuel system, as the issue may involve fuel delivery, sensors, or the engine's response system.

Filed: Dec 2020

Your car can keep running even after you remove the key from the ignition, and the seat belt connector may disconnect on its own while driving. The vehicle doors can be opened using a coin instead of the proper key, and warning lights on your dashboard may illuminate randomly without a clear reason. These issues likely involve problems with the ignition switch, seat belt mechanism, door lock actuators, and the engine control unit's sensor connections.

Unknown Or Other1 issue
highUNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Nov 2020

Your check engine light came on two days after purchasing the vehicle, and you're experiencing jerking when accelerating between 40-55 mph and difficulty stopping at stop signs. Your ABS and traction control lights are also illuminated on the dashboard. Additionally, the vehicle is consuming fuel excessively and the heater isn't warming up properly. These issues likely stem from diagnostic trouble codes that need to be read and addressed, possibly involving the engine, braking system, and fuel delivery.

NHTSA #: 11375486
Steering1 issue
highSTEERING
Filed: Sep 2020

Your steering wheel became locked while the vehicle was parked and wouldn't unlock, even when you tried different keys including a new dealer key. This prevents you from being able to drive the car. The issue likely involves the steering column lock mechanism that needs to be inspected or replaced.
