BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2007-2011 BMW X5 3.0si, X5 4.8i, X5 M, X5 xDrive30i, X5 xDrive35i, X5 xDrive48i and X5 xDrive50i, 2008-2011 X6 x Drive35i, X6 xDrive50i and X6 M, 2010-2011 X6 ActiveHybrid, 535i xDrive Gran Turismo, 535i Gran Turismo, 550i xDrive Gran Turismo and 550i Gran Turismo, 2011-2012 528i, 535i, 535i xDrive, 550i and 550i xDrive and 2012 535i ActiveHybrid, 640i Convertible, 650i Convertible, 650i xDrive Convertible, 650i Coupe and 650i Coupe xDrive vehicles. The affected vehicles have in-tank fuel pumps that may have insufficiently crimped wire contacts.
Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump module, free of charge. The recall began February 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Your car's fuel pump has failed multiple times — it was recalled and fixed in 2017, failed again twice in 2021 leaving you stranded in extreme heat, and stopped a fourth time in July when it was very hot. The dealership's diagnostic ($358) determined the problem is faulty wiring between the fuel pump and engine, not the fuel pump itself. You may need the fuel pump wiring harness and connections inspected and replaced to prevent future stalling.

Your engine sputtered and vibrated while driving, then died and wouldn't restart near a gas station. Testing showed no fuel pressure reaching the engine, and inspection revealed the fuel pump wiring had damaged insulation and melted splice connections from a previous recall repair (#16V746000) that was supposed to fix fuel pump connector melting problems. You're concerned the wiring repair may not have solved the overheating issue. The fix will likely involve inspecting the fuel pump wiring, replacing damaged sections, and possibly redoing the splice connections with proper materials and technique.

2009 BMW X5 DIESEL PASSIVE TANK FAILED. I TOLD THE DEALER AND CALLED BMW CUSTOMER CARE AND TOLD THEM THIS IS EMMISIONS RELATED AND THEY SHOULD HAVE REPLACED IT WHEN THEY REPLACED THE ACTIVE TANK A YEAR AGO. BMW DIESELS WILL NOT PASS SMOG DUE TO DEFECTIVE DESIGNS OF THE ACTIVE AND PASSIVE TANKS THAT CONTAIN DEF. THE SENSORS ARE LOCATED INSIDE THE TANK AND CANNOT BE REPLACED BY AN OVER THE COUNTER BMW PART. HENCE THE WHOLE TANKS HAVE TO BE REPLACED. BMW CUSTOMER SERVICE IS NOT WILLING TO HELP AND BASICALLY TOLD ME TO GO BUY ANOTHER BRAND WHICH I WILL AFTER OWNING 4 BMW. BMW SHOULD BE HEAVILY INVESTIGATED FOR DESIGNING A POOR EMMISIONS SYSTEM FOUND IN THE BMW X5 AND 335D DIESEL VEHICLES SOLD IN THE USA. SHAME ON YOU BMW FOR SCREWING YOUR LOYAL CUSTOMES.

MY CAR CAUGHT FIRE WHILE DRIVING UNDER MY PASSENGER BACKSEAT WHERE THE FUEL PUMP IS LOCATED UP UNDER. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT CAME, SNATCHED OUT SEAT AND PUT THE FLAME OUT.
IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, THE VEHICLE LOST POWER UNEXPECTEDLY. THE FUEL INJECTOR MALFUNCTIONED. THIS WAS DUE TO WATER LEAKING TO THIS AREA AS IT IS NOT PROPERLY PROTECTED.

BMW FUEL PUMP RECALL VEHICLE IS HARD TO START AND IT IS PROGRESSIVELY GETTING WORSE. THERE IS A MANDATORY NHTSA MANDATED FUEL PUMP RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE. WE RECEIVED THE OWNER NOTIFICATION LETTER. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER AT FIRST THAT THE FUEL PUMP IS NOT AVAILABLE. AFTER I PERSISTED THE DEALER STATED THAT THE FUEL PUMP IS AVAILABLE BUT THAT THEY HAVE TO PERFORM A DIAGNOSTIC FIRST. A) IT IS UNLAWFUL TO CHARGE A DIAGNOSTIC FEE IN CONJUNCTION WITH A FEDERALLY MANDATED RECALL. B) THE FUEL PUMP ISSUE HAS BEEN KNOWN TO BMW FOR MANY YEARS (BMW HAD A VOLUNTARY REIMBURSEMENT OF FUEL PUMP REPAIRS IN PLACE UNTIL NHTSA MANDATED THE RECALL OF ALL VEHICLES WITH THE AFFECTED FUEL PUMP.) I OWN A BMW X5 DIESEL 2009 MODEL YEAR, SOMETIME 2012 THE DEF ACTIVE TANK WAS REPLACED AS COVERED BY RECALL. NOW IT HAS STARTED TO GIVE THE SAME CEL CODE ( ACTIVE TANK TEMP SENSOR FAILURE). THE REPLACEMENT FOR THIS ISSUE IS VERY COSTLY. THIS IS PART OF EMISSIONS AND BMW DOES NOT WANT ANY REPLACEMENT WITHOUT ANY COST TO CONSUMERS.

I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE ABOUT AIR BAGS IN AUGUST. I HAVE STILL NOT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF PARTS. MY BMW X5 IS NOW HAVING ANOTHER VERY DEBILITATING PROBLEM. IT SHUTS OFF, STALLS, WON'T START, EMITS VERY TOXIC AND STRONG FUMES OF BURNING GAS WHEN I START MY CAR AND WHEN IM IDLING. THE ENGINE LIGHT UP THEN , IT SHAKES, IT HAS NO PUNCH. I FELT AS THOUGH IT WAS PART OF THE OTHER RECALL WITH THE FUEL PUMP AND I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL BMW DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSTICS AND THEY DISMISSED ME, TOLD ME I HAD TO PAY MORE FOR MORE TESTS AND THAT IT ABSOLUTELY WAS NOT THE FUEL PUMP RECALL. IN THE MEANTIME I ASKED ABOUT THE AIR BAG RECALL AND THEY SAID NO THEY COULDN'T HELP. I COMPLAINED AND [XXX] OF PARTS AND SERVICE SAID FINE, THEY WOULD FIX THE AIRBAGS RIGHT THEN, BUT COULDN'T OFFER ME A RENTAL. AFTER 3 HOURS AND 3 HOURS MORE I COULD NOT STAY BECAUSE I HAD TO WORK SO HE PUT THAT I REQUEST RECALLVWORK ON MY CAR WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE. I JUST COULDN'T STAY. I NEEDED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT FOR ACDAY THAT I WAS OFF BUT HE WAS VERY UNHELPFUL. WELL YESTERDAY I RECEIVED THE ORIGINIAL RECALL LETTER FOR THE FUEL PUMP AND IM SHOCKED ONCE AGAIN THAT THERE IS NO SOLUTION AT THIS TIME. I HAVE A CAR THAT IS A TICKING TIME BOMB WAITING TO EXPLODE. #5 & 6 FUEL INJECTORS HAD TO BE REPLACED IN JULY 2015. #5 FUEL INJECTOR HAD TO BE REPLACED AGAIN IN JULY 2016. SAME MECHANIC PERFORMED BOTH REPAIRS. HE ADVISED AND GAVE ME A "TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN" THAT DESCRIBED FUEL INJECTOR FAULTS AND FACTORY COVERED REPAIRS. - PLEASE ADVISE ME OF THIS- THERE IS NO OUTSTANDING RECALL THAT I CAN FIND FOR THIS.
THE POWER CABLE GOING TO THE IN-TANK FUEL PUMP BURNT UP, MELTING THE PUMP HOUSING AND MELTING THE INSULATION ON THE WIRES IN THE TANK. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THEY SAID IT WAS A KNOWN ISSUE AND THAT NEW FIRMWARE WILL FIX THE ISSUE TO REDUCE HOW MUCH CURRENT THE PUMP DRAWS, THEY SAID THERE WAS NO RECALL OR WARRANTY ON THIS ITEM. THE VEHICLE COULD HAVE CAUGHT ON FIRE WITH WIRES GETTING HOT ENOUGH TO MELT THE INSULATION IN THE FUEL TANK! HOW COULD THIS NOT HAVE BEEN A RECALL?

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL SUPPLY SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. THE FAILURE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
THE VEHICLE STALLED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. THE STALL IS RELATED TO THE CAMSHAFT SENSOR NOT PROPERLY WORKING AND THE FUEL SYSTEM NOT WORKING PROPERLY. I HAVE A 2009 BMW 528I. IN APRIL 2014 BMW DID A RECALL RELATED TO THE CAMSHAFT FOR 2010 - 2014 528 BMW'S. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL DEALER AND THE NATIONAL BMW DEALER TO LET THEM KNOW I WAS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 2009 AND TO SEE IF THEY WERE GOING TO EXPAND THE RECALL TO INCLUDE THE 2009 MODELS. THEY TOLD ME NO AT THIS TIME THEY DIDN'T HAVE ANY INFORMATION REGARDING EXPANDING THE RECALL. I ALSO LET THEM KNOW THAT I HAD ANOTHER PROBLEM WITH THE CAR THAT COULD BE RELATED TO THE CAMSHAFT. THE CAR'S FUEL SYSTEM WAS LEAKING.THE GAS WAS NOT PROPERLY GOING TO THE ENGINE AND IT WAS FLOWING BACK INTO THE CAR AND THE EXHAUST. YOU COULD SMELL GAS IN THE CAR AND SEE PUDDLES OF GAS WHEN THEY LIFTED THE BACK SEAT OF THE CAR. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME I WAS DRIVING A BOMB. I PAID $450 TO HAVE THAT REPAIRED. SINCE JULY 2013 I'M HAVING PROBLEM WITH MY 2009 BMW X5 WHERE THERE IS RAW FUEL SMELL INSIDE OF THE CAR CABIN, I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR TO BMW DEALERSHIP MANY TIMES, THE DEALERSHIP SAYS IT'S THE VAPOR RECOVERY SYSTEM, BUT THE BMW REP. SHOWS UP AND SAYS IF IT WAS THE VAPOR RECOVERY SYSTEM ENGINE CHECK LIGHT WOULD GO ON AND HE DOES NOT LET THE DEALERSHIP TO CHANGE THE VAPOR RECOVERY SYSTEM FOR $1100 WHICH IS COVERED UNDER MY BMW WARRANTY, I HAVE FOUND THAT ON 2007 AND 2008 BMW X5 BMW NORTH AMERICA ALREADY DID A RECALL ON THE VAPOR RECOVERY SYSTEM AND REPLACED THEM, BUT THEY ARE REFUSING TO FIX MY PROBLEM AND ME AND MY SMALL KIDS ARE GETTING SICK DRIVING THIS CAR BECAUSE OF THE RAW FUEL SMELL. *TR

THE CAR HAS RUN OUT OF GAS WITH THE FUEL GAUGE REGISTERING HALF FULL. DEALER HAS REPLACED BOTH FUEL PUMPS AND FUEL SENSORS/SENDING UNITS AS WELL AS AN ELECTRONIC JUNCTION BOX TO NO AVAIL. LIKELIHOOD OF BECOMING STRANDED IS HIGH, IN ADDITION TO NEVER KNOWING HOW MUCH FUEL IS ACTUALLY IN THE TANK. MUST GUESS BY KEEPING TRACK OF MILES TRAVELED AFTER LAST FILL-UP. IN ADDITION, REAR LIFT GATE WILL NOT FUNCTION (VERY) INTERMITTENTLY WITH "COMFORT ACCESS" OPTION. MUST USE KEY TO MANUALLY OPEN THE LIFT GATE. DEALER HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO REPRODUCE THIS PHENOMENON IN THE SHOP, BUT IT CONTINUES TO OCCUR AND HAS OCCURRED SINCE THE CAR WAS BRAND NEW. *TR
