RECALLCampaign #17V047000

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2000-2002 BMW 320i, 323i, 325i, 325xi, 330i, 330xi, 323Ci, 325Ci, 330Ci, M3, 323iT, 325iT and 325xiT vehicles, 2001-2002 525i, 530i, 540i, M5, 525iT and 540iT vehicles, and 2001-2003 X5 3.0i, X5 4.4i, and X5 4.6is vehicles. These vehicles may have had a driver-side air bag module installed as replacement equipment such as after a vehicle crash necessitating replacement of the original air bag, or as a remedy part for a prior recall. These replacement modules contain an air bag inflator that may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to lower absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.

Fix: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the vehicle has been remedied. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver side air bag module, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 15, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Your vehicle has a safety recall related to the airbags that needs to be addressed before driving. You're having difficulty scheduling the recall repair because local dealerships won't provide towing or mobile service to your home. This is a critical safety issue that requires professional diagnosis and repair at a service facility.

Your airbags deployed unexpectedly while driving, even though there was no crash or impact. You sustained minor injuries that didn't require medical attention. This is a serious safety defect that needs immediate diagnosis to prevent future unintended deployments.

Your passenger side airbag deployed on its own without any accident or impact occurring. You contacted BMW corporate and took the vehicle to a dealer for diagnosis, but they were unable to identify the cause or fix the problem, and returned the vehicle to you with the airbag malfunction unresolved. The airbag control module or sensor wiring may need to be diagnosed and repaired to prevent future unintended deployments.

Your front passenger side airbag inflated on its own while the vehicle was parked, injuring both you and your passenger. The dealer confirmed the airbag malfunctioned, but the exact cause couldn't be determined. The airbag system will need to be diagnosed and repaired to prevent this from happening again.

Your airbag warning light has been on for an extended period. When you took your car to a BMW dealer in March 2019, they told you your airbag system wasn't included in a recall notice you'd received, and the light remains on today. The dealer quoted you over $2,000 to replace the airbag module. You're concerned about whether this is accurate and what options you have to resolve the issue.

You own a 2001 BMW X5 that's subject to a Takata airbag recall (NHTSA campaign 17V047000). The replacement airbag parts needed to complete the recall repair have not been available, and the manufacturer has taken longer than reasonable to provide them. You haven't experienced an airbag failure, but the recall remains unresolved due to parts shortage.

You received a recall notice for your 2001 BMW X5 regarding Takata airbags (NHTSA Campaign 17V047000), but the repair parts were not available. BMW took longer than a reasonable amount of time to provide the replacement parts needed to complete the recall repair. While you haven't experienced an airbag failure, the extended delay suggests a parts distribution issue on the manufacturer's end. The fix will require BMW to supply and install replacement airbag components.

THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT ON THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TURNED ON WHEN I HAD A PASSENGER IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT OF THE VEHICLE. IT WOULD GO OFF AFTER A FEW START CYCLES WITH NO PASSENGERS, BUT THEN COME BACK ON THE NEXT TIME A PASSENGER WAS IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. I WAS ABLE TO READ THE CODES WHICH INDIRECTLY INDICATED A FAULT IN THE OCCUPANCY SENSOR MAT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. I REPLACED THE SENSOR MAT AND RELATED WIRING INTERFACE AND THE WARNING LIGHT AND ERRORS HAVE NOT RETURNED. THERE ARE MANY OWNERS GROUPS THAT DISCUSS THE APPARENT HIGH FAILURE RATE OF THESE OCCUPANCY SENSOR MATS AND WE HAVE NOTED THAT MORE RECENT X5 MODELS WERE RECALLED, BUT THAT EARLIER MODELS WERE NOT. I SUSPECT THAT THE EARLIER MODELS HAVE THE SAME - OR A RELATED - PROBLEM. *TR
